Scouting report

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Denver Broncos

Darren Waller had a quiet day by his standards last week against the Bears, catching just four of his eight targets for 45 yards. Waller has at least seven targets in every game so far this year and he remains near the top of our weekly tight end rankings due to his role in the offense.

Even in a tough matchup against a Broncos defense that ranks fifth in aFPA to opposing tight ends, Waller should still be active, given his target share. We have him ranked inside our top five this week, and fantasy managers shouldn’t think about sitting him so long as he remains healthy.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Chicago Bears

Darren Waller had four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown last week against the Chargers, and he was second on the team with seven targets. Waller has had three straight games with seven targets and at least 50 yards following his huge Week 1 performance, and he remains an elite fantasy option at the tight end position.

This week, Waller faces a Bears defense that ranks fourth in aFPA to opposing tight ends. While that’s not a good matchup for Waller, the offense should still run primarily through him. At such a thin position for fantasy production, Waller is a must-start regardless of matchup and he should still be active as a top-five option this week.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Los Angeles Chargers

Darren Waller had five catches on seven targets for 54 yards last week against the Dolphins. Waller has only modest production – by his standards – since his dominant Week 1 performance, but he’s still scoring double-digit PPR points and is still the focal point of the Raiders’ offense. Fantasy managers shouldn’t be too concerned.

This week, Waller faces a Chargers defense that ranks fifth in aFPA to opposing tight ends but just gave up 104 yards to Travis Kelce. Waller is a must-start every week due to his volume, and against the Chargers, we still have him ranked as an elite option. Start him.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Miami Dolphins

Darren Waller caught five of seven targets last week for 65 yards against the Steelers. Waller continues to be the cog through which the Raiders run their offense. For five catches on seven targets to be considered a “down” week shows how special Waller is as a fantasy option.

This week, Waller faces a Dolphins defense that gave up a touchdown to Dawson Knox last week but has generally been pretty good against the pass through two games. Regardless of matchup, however, Waller is a must-start every week due to his huge target share and ability to make big plays downfield. It’s nice to have a spot on your fantasy roster that you don’t need to think about each week.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Darren Waller had 10 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens on Monday night. He also had 19 targets. 19 targets. 19 targets. No, really, 19 targets! That’s ridiculous. His usage continues to be exponential and there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to be the primary focus of this offense.

It’ll be a tough matchup for Waller in Week 2 against a Steelers defense that ranked third in the league last year in aFPA to opposing tight ends. Still, Waller is too good and gets too many targets to even consider benching him, regardless of matchup. Start him and expect volume to outweigh opposition on his way to another TE1 performance.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Darren Waller just had 14 targets while you read this blurb. There’s another five. And another… I can’t keep up! The Raiders definitely ran their offense through Waller last year, and he finished as far and away the best fantasy tight end outside of Kansas City. There’s no reason to expect him not to continue to post incredible receiving lines for his position after consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and 107 receptions last year. He also scored nine touchdowns in 2020, up from just three in his breakout 2019 year.

This week, Waller faces a Ravens defense that ranked 18th in aFPA to opposing tight ends last year, but even if it wasn’t a great matchup, you’d still be starting him. His kind of production is rare for the position, and the Raiders didn’t do anything in the offseason to make me think they won’t continue to feature him in the offense. Start him.

LV TE Darren Waller - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Darren Waller was a dominant fantasy tight end last year, putting up his second consecutive 1,000-plus-yard season and catching 107 of 145 targets. He was tied with Travis Kelce for the most targets among TE’s and fourth-most among all players. Waller also found the end zone nine times, a great sign after scoring just three touchdowns in 2019. The Raiders should continue to lean on him heavily going into 2021, and it seems like he’s just hitting his prime.

Fantasy Downside

There really isn’t any downside to Waller. Barring injury, there’s no reason to expect his targets to decrease. The Raiders replaced Nelson Agholor with John Brown and added Kenyan Drake, but neither of those moves seems like a huge threat to Waller. I guess since he’ll be 29 years old in September already, we could see some sort of a decline due to age. Perhaps, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet with Waller. Even a touchdown regression won’t take him out of contention for TE2 behind Kelce.

2021 Bottom Line

Waller will cost you a late-second rounder in most drafts, but he’s worth the price considering the volume that comes his way. If you can add one of those elite three tight ends to your roster in the late-second or early-third round, then you’re off to an excellent start in all formats.
