Scouting report

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New Orleans Saints

Darren Waller had only 45 yards, but he caught six passes on a team-high eight targets and appears to still be the primary weapon in the passing game for the Raiders. Waller may actually find more room underneath if Henry Ruggs continues to stretch the defense a bit, as he did against the Panthers. He’s a little hobbled, but it seems like his presence may open things up a bit for Waller, rather just stealing targets.

The Saints held Rob Gronkowski to just 11 yards on two catches last week, but allowed a touchdown to O.J. Howard. The Raiders should continue to prioritize Waller in the passing game, so as long as his targets continue to be high, he should be considered a must-start in all league formats.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Carolina Panthers

Darren Waller was a league-winner last season, busting out of nowhere to get 1,145 yards on 90 catches. He only found the end zone three times, but his 117 targets are sure encouraging going into his second season as the Raiders’ starter. Waller will have more competition for targets this year with the additions of rookies Henry Ruggs and Bryan Edwards, as well as veteran Jason Witten, but he should still be featured in the Las Vegas passing attack.

Waller starts the season with a tough matchup against the Panthers, who were third last season in aFPA to opposing tight ends. Carolina will miss Luke Kuechly, but they got a nice influx of young talent and return Kawann Short from injury, so they should still be reasonably stout. Regardless of matchup, however, Waller is a must-start in all formats as one of the few tight ends in the league who is legitimately the best receiving option on his team.

LV TE Darren Waller - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Darren Waller exploded in his fourth season. After three years and just 18 total receptions, he entered last season as the starter for the Raiders and responded with a fantastic season. He caught 90 balls on 117 targets, and had 1,145 yards and three touchdowns. He led the team in both receptions and receiving yards and showed seam-stretching ability. He was fifth among tight ends with 12.7 yards per reception and had a 75-yard touchdown.

Fantasy Downside

The Raiders mysteriously added Jason Witten in the offseason, who is likely to take targets away from someone. While it’s very possible the two of them are on the field at the same time regularly, it’ll be interesting to see where that places Waller. He had significant snaps out wide and in the slot last season, so he definitely has the skill set, but he was still inline on 59% of his offensive snaps, according to PFF. The way this dynamic shapes out will help frame what kind of upside Waller has as he tries to repeat an excellent 2019 season. Additionally, Waller’s three touchdowns will need to improve if he can crack the elite fantasy tight end territory.

2020 Bottom Line

Waller should be a solid weekly starter at a position where consistency is scarce. In all likelihood, Witten will be mostly a backup and some additional weapons in the passing game might take pressure off Waller. Still, his fifth-round ADP in 12-team leagues can be a little hard to stomach when that’s a prime spot to grab a WR2. If he slides a little however, grab him eagerly as he should be in line for another great season.

OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Denver Broncos
UPDATE: Tyrell Williams will play in Week 17

In Week 16, Waller played 81% of the snaps, had four receptions on four targets, 37 yards, 19 air yards, zero touchdowns, 13% of the team targets, 14% of the team air yards and finished as the half PPR TE20. As predicted, Hunter Renfrow’s return had a negative impact on Waller’s fantasy performance.

The Raiders are motivated to win because they still have a slim chance of making the playoffs. A lot of pieces would have to fall into place but it is still mathematically possible.

The Denver Broncos are the thirteenth best defense against tight ends, per our schedule adjust fantasy points metric. 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Waller ranked as the half PPR TE6. Tyrell Williams missed practice on Thursday with ongoing issues caused by plantar fasciitis. Monitor Williams’ status closely because Waller could receive a slight boost if Williams is ruled out.

OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Los Angeles Chargers
In Week 15, Waller played 88% of the snaps, had eight receptions on 10 targets, 122 yards, 93 air yards, zero touchdowns, 28% of the team targets, 39% of the team air yards and finished as the half PPR TE4.

The Los Angeles Chargers are the third-best defense against wide receivers, per our schedule adjust fantasy points metric. 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Waller ranked as the half PPR TE4. The return of Hunter Renfrow may not seem significant but it could lower Waller’s ceiling. Renfrow’s usage in the short-yardage passing game overlaps with Waller’s usage, which could reduce his target share.

OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
In Week 14, Waller played 97% of the snaps, had six receptions on six targets, 72 yards, 52 air yards, zero touchdowns, 18% of the team targets, 21% of the team air yards and finished as the TE15. Foster Moreau vultured another touchdown but also suffered a knee injury later in the game and has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Jaguars are mediocre against tight ends, seventeenth best, per our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Waller ranked as the half PPR TE4. With the injury to Foster Moreau, Waller will look to find the end zone for the first time since Week 8.

OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Tennessee Titans
In Week 13, Waller benefited from the absence of Hunter Renfrow. He finished with seven receptions on nine targets, 100 yards, 82 air yards, 30% of the team targets, 48% of the team air yards. He would have had a better fantasy performance but Derek Carrier vultured a touchdown.

The Titans are the eighth-worst defense against tight ends, per our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Waller ranked as the half PPR TE4. Waller is most likely a must start for fantasy managers because tight end continues to be very thin.
