Scouting report

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Washington Redskins

David Montgomery saw a lot more work in Week 2 than he did in Week 1. The rookie back ran 18 times (compared to Tarik Cohen's 4 and Mike Davis' 3) for 62 yards and a touchdown. He also had three targets, catching one pass for six yards. The interesting thing, though, is he didn't see a huge bump in playing time. He went from playing 38% of the snaps in Week 1 to 44% of the snaps in Week 2. But overall, everything is trending upwards for Montgomery after a bad opening game.

He gets a favorable matchup this week against the Redskins who have allowed 100+ rushing yards in each of the first two games (over 200 in Week 2). With Montgomery's usage increasing, he should be a strong RB2 option this week.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Denver Broncos

David Montgomery had the fewest amount of snaps in Week 1 among the Bears' backfield options. He saw fewer snaps (28) than Mike Davis (41) and Tarik Cohen (51), although he did lead the way in carries with six for 18 yards. He also caught a pass for 27 yards, although it was his lone target on the night. The Montgomery hype train has been derailed thanks to the Davis, who ended up having bigger role than many projected.

Montgomery will still be involved in the offense, but until Davis is out of the picture, it'll be hard for him to live up to his draft-day value. He gets a decent matchup this week against the Broncos, who nearly allowed 100 yards on the ground last week. We like Montgomery as an RB3 option.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers

Chicago selected David Montgomery in the third round of the NFL Draft, and he's projected to have a big role as a rookie after the team traded away Jordan Howard in free agency. Howard finished just shy of 1,000 rushing yards (935) last season, and many expect Montgomery to essentially fill that role while Tarik Cohen continues to be the pass-catching back.

However, the Bears' first unofficial depth chart of the season has Montgomery has the third-string back behind Cohen and Mike Davis. We wouldn't read too much into that as Montgomery has been hyped up throughout camp. He even sat out with the starters for the final three preseason games.

Montgomery should be viewed as a lower-end RB2 choice against the Packers this week. Green Bay was middle-of-the-pack stopping running backs last season, allowing the 14th-most fantasy points to the position. The Packers strengthened their defense in the offseason, and could make things a little difficult for Montgomery.

CHI RB David Montgomery - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Bears traded away Jordan Howard in the offseason and selected David Montgomery in the third round of the NFL Draft. In his final two seasons with Iowa State, Montgomery finished with 2,816 scrimmage yards. He’s projected to start for Chicago right away, and he’ll be much more of a receiving threat than Howard was in Chicago. He steps into a great offense under Matt Nagy and should benefit from the Bears’ stout defense as Chicago will likely lean on the rushing attack late in games.

Fantasy Downside
While Montgomery should have a great rookie season, we can’t ignore the presence of Tarik Cohen and free-agent acquisition Mike Davis. Cohen has proven to be a great third-down/change-of-pace back and Davis is just good enough to limit Montgomery’s full potential. When Davis was asked about the usage of all three guys he said, “We all can be on the field at the same time. It's going to be crazy the things we do as far as of all three of us being on the field.”

2019 Bottom Line
Montgomery is an exciting prospect. He’s a talented running back, stepping into a great offensive system, but there is a fair amount of risk in the fact he’s a rookie and Chicago could make this a committee backfield. A lot of his value will come from how much Chicago ends up using Davis. If Davis has a small role, then Montgomery will be worth his current ADP, but if Davis has a larger role than expected, then this could end up being a bad value pick.
