Scouting report

DET RB David Montgomery - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Los Angeles Chargers

As the Lions come back from their bye week, they could be getting David Montgomery back as well, who missed three games with injured ribs. He’ll return right back to RB2 status as the Lions have loved using Montgomery this season (see his 32-carry performance against the Packers). He’ll split with Jahmyr Gibbs, but the Lions have shown there is plenty to go around between the two.

DET RB David Montgomery - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Another big day for David Montgomery in Week 5 with Jahmyr Gibbs out with an injury. Montgomery has now scored a touchdown in every game he has played in this season. He even has 20 receiving yards in each of the last two games. Even with Gibbs coming back, the Lions see him as a change of pace back. The Lions will feed Montgomery, making him a strong fantasy start.

DET RB David Montgomery - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Carolina Panthers

Seems David Montgomery is just fine. In his first game back from injury, he carried the ball 32 times. Thirty. Two. Detroit is back to focusing on Montgomery in the run game while Jahmyr Gibbs gets a few carries and some work in the passing game. He won’t always get that many touches, but he’ll get plenty enough to be a solid RB2 going forward.

DET RB David Montgomery - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Green Bay Packers

A thigh injury sidelined David Montgomery in Week 3 and with the Lions on a short week for Week 4, proceed with caution on Montgomery against the Packers defense. He's been estimated as limited on the Lions' practice reports and should be considered questionable for Thursday. If he is able to go, he's worth a flex look even with splitting work with Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery should be the ground back if he plays.

DET RB David Montgomery - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Detroit wasn't kidding when they wanted to make David Montgomery a key part of the offense. He saw 21 carries and had 74 yards and a touchdown. The Lions at some point will get Jahmyr Gibbs more involved in the offense, but Montgomery isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The Seahawks allowed three rushing touchdowns last week against the Rams so Montgomery can certainly make it two weeks in a row with a touchdown to start the season.

DET RB David Montgomery - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Kansas City Chiefs

The Lions used a first-round pick on running back Jahmyr Gibbs but they also invested in David Montgomery in free agency to take over the Jamaal Williams role and we know how that turned out last season. Montgomery will also arguably add more than Williams did. At the very least, Montgomery will work the ground game, get the short yards and be the goal-line back so he’ll rack up some touchdowns this season. Against the Chiefs, he’s a good bet to score one, so even though he’s combining forces with Gibbs, there will be enough work for Montgomery to keep him fantasy-relevant until proven otherwise. He also may not have to worry about running into DT Chris Jones, which is a huge plus. He’s a solid RB2/Flex this week.

DET RB David Montgomery - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
David Montgomery could be considered the new Jamaal Williams in Detroit and should get a bit more freedom as a back. Chicago gave a good bit of work to Khalil Herbert, capping Montgomery's value there. Yes, the Lions did draft Jahmyr Gibbs, but he'll play more of the D'Andre Swift role. Montgomery could see plenty of early-down work and goal-line work, as Williams did.

Fantasy Downside
With Gibbs in the mix, Montgomery probably won't factor a ton in the passing game. Gibbs will take the Swift role, so Montgomery loses a little steam in PPR leagues, but not nearly enough to be forgotten about.

2023 Bottom Line
Detroit should be very potent on offense this season and should move the ball well on the ground. There should be more than enough work even with Gibbs around the make Montgomery fantasy-viable. He'll be a stable RB2 this season for fantasy purposes and for a good price in the 7th round,
