CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 – DeAngelo Williams vs. New Orleans
DeAngelo Williams has been out injured several weeks, but early reports indicate that he may be ready to suit up on Thursday night against the Saints. Even if he does, he is likely to only get spot duty along with Jonathan Stewart and is not worth inserting into your fantasy lineup at this time. Both runners in Carolina will likely see their fantasy value decrease due to the activity of the other one, and Williams isn’t ready to be added to a fantasy roster yet.

Update:

Williams is now set to start, which really just hurts Jonathan Stewart's value more than it increases Williams'. Williams is a desperation option for fantasy owners as he'll still likely split time with Stewart, but he does have the potential to get a dozen or so touches, making him fantasy viable for teams really needing help.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – DeAngelo Williams vs. Baltimore

DeAngelo Williams had a moderately successful Week 1, but has been out the last two games with injuries. He should be back this week against Baltimore, and if he plays he should get a fair amount of touches, as injuries have completely wiped out the Panthers’ backfield. Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert are both set to miss time, and Williams should benefit.

Against a tough Baltimore defense that is so far top ten against the run this season, expect Williams to have another modest showing. He’s a nice bye week filler however, as he’s bound to get at least a dozen touches or so for the Panthers, who will need to establish a run game against the Ravens. Williams has little upside, but he’d not a horrible low-end RB2 or Flex play if you’re having bye week issues.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – DeAngelo Williams vs. Detroit

DeAngelo Williams honored his mother who lost her battle with breast cancer earlier this year by dying his dreads pink on Sunday. Maybe he should dye all his hair pink, because he rushed for 72 yards on 14 carries, for a 5.14 yard per carry average. Williams was a big reason why the Panthers came away with a victory against the Bucs on Sunday.

This week, Williams will face a Lions team that was surprisingly stingy against the Giants on Monday night. Ultimately, we’ll find out if that was more to do with Detroit’s defense or New York’s offensive struggles. Either way, Williams remains a solid but not spectacular fantasy option, particularly as a bench guy and bye week filler. He’ll continue to share carries with Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert, which limits his value. He’s really only an option for owners who already have injury issues at the position.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – DeAngelo Williams vs. Tampa Bay
DeAngelo Williams is coming off a very unspectacular three seasons, averaging right around 800 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Last season, he benefitted from additional carries with an injured Jonathan Stewart, but his yards per carry was also well below his career average.

Entering the season, with Stewart healthy and fantasy’s biggest vulture Mike Tolbert still stealing short yardage carries, Williams has limited upside. Where his value lies is as a middle of the road option for fantasy owners; a guy who will probably get you around the 6.5 fantasy points we have projected for him… no more, no less. Against the Bucs stingy run defense, we have him ranked as a low end RB3 option in large leagues. Hopefully you’re not relying on him already, and instead have him for injury and bye week filler later in the season.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams- 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Now 31 years old, DeAngelo Williams probably doesn’t have a whole lot left in the tank. However, he’s been a fairly consistent player the past few years, averaging about 805 yards and five touchdowns and about four and a half yards per carry. His only real competition is a currently healthy Jonathan Stewart and an out-of-shape Mike Tolbert, so nothing has changed since last season. The Panthers are hoping they can get a little more out of their trio this year.

Fantasy Upside
Williams has been the most consistent of the Panthers backs and he still has some juice to take it the distance, despite his advanced age for a running back. He had a 43 yard run last year, and took a pass 72 yards as well. While he’s not likely to bust out 1,300 combined yards anymore, all signs point to another grinding season of about 1,000 combined yards from scrimmage and about five touchdowns.

Fantasy Downside
Williams’ downside is that he lacks upside. He isn’t likely to score more than five touchdowns with Tolbert around, and he isn’t likely to put up a lot of yardage with Jonathan Stewart (currently) healthy. Williams also is 31 and has seen his yards per carry average drop the last two years off his career averages, always a concerning sign for an aging back.

Bottom Line
Much like Jonathan Stewart, the value in Williams is his ADP. He’s often available in the 12th round, which is decent value for a guy we have ranked as a borderline RB3 in most leagues. He’s not the sexy pick, but if you absolutely need to have a guy to plug in on a bye week or as an injury fill-in, he’s not a bad guy to do it. He’s as unlikely to get you zero as he is to get you 20+.
