Now 31 years old, DeAngelo Williams probably doesn’t have a whole lot left in the tank. However, he’s been a fairly consistent player the past few years, averaging about 805 yards and five touchdowns and about four and a half yards per carry. His only real competition is a currently healthy Jonathan Stewart and an out-of-shape Mike Tolbert, so nothing has changed since last season. The Panthers are hoping they can get a little more out of their trio this year.
Fantasy Upside
Williams has been the most consistent of the Panthers backs and he still has some juice to take it the distance, despite his advanced age for a running back. He had a 43 yard run last year, and took a pass 72 yards as well. While he’s not likely to bust out 1,300 combined yards anymore, all signs point to another grinding season of about 1,000 combined yards from scrimmage and about five touchdowns.
Fantasy Downside
Williams’ downside is that he lacks upside. He isn’t likely to score more than five touchdowns with Tolbert around, and he isn’t likely to put up a lot of yardage with Jonathan Stewart (currently) healthy. Williams also is 31 and has seen his yards per carry average drop the last two years off his career averages, always a concerning sign for an aging back.
Bottom Line
Much like Jonathan Stewart, the value in Williams is his ADP. He’s often available in the 12th round, which is decent value for a guy we have ranked as a borderline RB3 in most leagues. He’s not the sexy pick, but if you absolutely need to have a guy to plug in on a bye week or as an injury fill-in, he’s not a bad guy to do it. He’s as unlikely to get you zero as he is to get you 20+.
