Scouting report

SF WR Deebo Samuel - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
It appears more progress has been made between the 49ers and Deebo Samuel on a new deal for the key offensive weapon. 49ers GM John Lynch said at his press conference as training camp opened that Samuel had reported. It doesn’t sound like an extension is imminent, but Lynch sounded optimistic that something will get done. And that's a key here. Remember, Samuel officially requested a trade in April after coming off the best year of his career. He is due a $3.986 million base salary this season, the final year of his rookie contract. Easily lost in all the drama, Samuel was named first-team All-Pro after totaling 1,405 receiving yards, 365 rushing yards, and 14 total touchdowns from scrimmage. As 4for4's John Paulsen noted, Samuel started to see a bigger rushing role in Week 10. From Week 1 to Week 9, he averaged 6.1 catches for 110 yards and 0.50 touchdowns (for 17.6 half-PPR PPG) on 10.0 targets per game. Starting in Week 10, he averaged 3.5 catches for 65 yards and 0.25 touchdowns on 5.0 targets per game. However, he averaged 19.9 half-PPR PPG behind 43 yards rushing and 0.88 rushing touchdowns per game. He averaged 6.6 rushes per game in that span compared to just 0.8 rushes per game from Week 1 to Week 9. He finished as the overall WR3.

2022 Fantasy Downside
The versatility that made him one of the most dangerous offensive players in the NFL apparently is also a major issue for Samuel.

2022 Bottom Line
The fact that his receiving numbers diminished as he become more of a threat on the ground isn't surprising. It's also promising. Although he takes a bit of a hit, the receiving totals over the first nine games were plenty solid. That said, the uncertainty about that rushing equity is the only thing keeping Samuel out of our top five at the position.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Houston Texans

Deebo Samuel had a great game against the Titans last week, catching nine of 11 targets for 159 yards. He also added 32 yards on five rush attempts. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in five games, but now has at least five carries in six straight games and is one of the primary components of the San Francisco offense.

This week, Samuel faces a Texans defense that ranks 28th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. If Trey Lance starts, downgrade Samuel a little, but not too much. Despite the decreased quality of targets he received, he still had nine balls thrown his way and ran in a touchdown the last time Lance started a game. Samuel is too talented to avoid, so keep him active, regardless of who is behind center.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Tennessee Titans

Deebo Samuel has been kind of quiet in the passing game over the past few weeks, with just one reception in each of his previous three games before catching four against the Falcons last Sunday. However, he’s been used consistently in the run game and has six rushing touchdowns over his past five games. He had four catches for 60 yards and six carries for 29 yards and a touchdown last week, and the 49ers clearly view him as a primary component of their offense.

This week, Samuel faces a Titans defense that ranks 30th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. It should be a great game for him and another full day of work. Fantasy managers shouldn’t hesitate to start him in an excellent matchup and we have him ranked as a solid WR1.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Atlanta Falcons

Deebo Samuel returned to action last week against the Bengals, and while he only caught one ball for 22 yards, he gained 37 yards and a touchdown on eight rush attempts as well. Samuel has at least five carries in each of his past four games and has five rushing touchdowns in that span – six on the season to go with five receiving touchdowns.

This week, Samuel faces a Falcons defense that ranks 26th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. In a great matchup, and seemingly healthy, Samuel should be considered a must-start in all formats. We have him ranked as a top-five option and he should be an elite fantasy starter again in Week 15.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Cincinnati Bengals

Deebo Samuel was hurt last week and is not a lock to play against the Bengals in Week 14, but the team has him listed as day to day with a groin injury, so there’s potential for him to suit up. If he does, he’s a must-start, despite the injury, given the production and target share he’s enjoyed all season. Have a backup plan in place, but as long as he’s active, he should be in your lineup.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Deebo Samuel had only one catch for 15 yards last week against the Jaguars, but he still ended up with a nice fantasy outing after rushing for 79 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts. Samuel has been nothing short of spectacular this season and is currently third in fantasy points among wide receivers.

This week, Samuel faces a Vikings defense that ranks 32nd in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. In a great matchup and a game that could be a shootout, we have Samuel ranked as a top-five option and he should be active in all leagues.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Jacksonville Jaguars

Deebo Samuel had a great game against the Rams on Monday night, with five rushing attempts, five receptions, 133 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Samuel has seven touchdowns on the season and is already at 979 receiving yards – second in the league behind Cooper Kupp.

This week, Samuel faces a Jaguars defense that ranks 15th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Samuel is tied for seventh in the league in targets and his target share has remained strong the past two weeks, even with George Kittle back in the lineup. As such, he’s an elite fantasy option in all formats and we have him ranked inside our top five. He’s an automatic start.
