Scouting report

BUF QB Derek Anderson - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. New England Patriots

Derek Anderson will get the start again for Buffalo after three interceptions in his 2018 debut. He only threw for 175 yards as the Bills did not score a touchdown. Anderson looked like a quarterback making only his fifth start in the last eight seasons.

It doesn't seem there is an answer for Buffalo at the quarterback position. No reason to play Anderson against the Pats on Monday night. No reason to even have him on your roster.

BUF QB Derek Anderson - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Indianapolis Colts

It will be his first start in two years, but there is one thing we can say about Derek Anderson entering this week's game against the Colts. He can't be any worse than Nate Peterman. Anderson is a veteran who has made 47 starts in his NFL career so this won't be anything new for the 35-year-old.

Anderson has a good matchup against a Colts defense that is ranked 26th in aFPA to quarterbacks. We really don't know what we are going to get from him. The Bills lack offensive weapons, especially in the passing game and we have seen the other QBs struggle in 2018. Anderson is not even worth a roster spot at this time, so keep him on the waiver wire.

CAR QB Derek Anderson - Week 5, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Tampa Bay
Cam Newton isn’t a sure thing this week coming off a concussion, which might make Derek Anderson streamable in large leagues. If Newton can’t go, it’s probably better for fantasy owners to look to a different team all together for a QB, but Anderson might have value as a desperation start with upside. The Bucs have allowed the fifth most passing touchdowns this season and Anderson has been productive in the past when given the opportunity. Anderson might be a last resort for owners with the Panthers playing Monday night.

CAR QB Derek Anderson - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 – Derek Anderson vs. Tampa Bay
Derek Anderson will get the start this week against the Bucs if Cam Newton’s injuries from a car accident on Tuesday prove to keep him out of the contest as expected. It’s a nice matchup for Anderson, and the veteran showed early in the season that he can put up decent numbers from the pocket. However, Anderson and the Panthers offense are too unpredictable to count on during the fantasy playoffs, and unless you’re in desperation mode, you should look elsewhere for a QB.

CAR QB Derek Anderson - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Derek Anderson vs. Detroit

Derek Anderson put forth a pretty good outing against the Bucs in Week 1, leading the team to victory and throwing the ball for 230 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and no picks. Anderson connected well with tight end Greg Olsen and rookie receiver Kelvin Benjamin, and he kept the defense from crowding the line of scrimmage all game, opening lanes for the Panthers runners.

Anderson will only start this week against the Lions if Cam Newton misses another week of action. Cam was a game time decision for the first game of the season, and will likely be back, but fantasy owners in 2QB leagues or owners with Cam should look to pick Anderson up if Newton misses the second game of the season as well. The Lions were terrible against the pass last year, and have a vulnerable secondary.

CAR QB Derek Anderson - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Derek Anderson has been the backup in Carolina since he arrived in 2011, and should continue in that role this season behind starter Cam Newton. Anderson is a former starter with a great deal of experience and seems to have settled into his role as the backup with the Panthers.

Fantasy Upside
Anderson still has a very strong arm and good size, standing 6’6 in the pocket. He’s had some fantasy value in the past, with stops in Cleveland and Arizona, including a Pro Bowl season all the way back in 2007 when he threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns. If called upon to start, Anderson can sling it.

Fantasy Downside
Anderson also slings it to opposing defenders when he gets the call, though. He has a career 53/55 TD/Int ratio and has never been considered a particularly accurate quarterback. Even if he winds up playing for an extended period of time, he’s unlikely to become a viable fantasy starter, unless you’re in a deep 2QB league.

Bottom Line
With reports of Cam Newton being a little banged up, Anderson may see the field early this year, but with a questionable supporting cast on offense and Anderson’s history of throwing the ball to the wrong team, it’s hard to imagine he’ll do a whole lot. No reason to draft him in most leagues.
