Scouting report

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs Broncos

JuJu Smith-Schuster was the leader of the pack on Monday against the Giants, but Diontae Johnson saw the most targets in Week 1, ten in total. He hauled in six of those targets. At least for Week 1, Johnson was clearly the second receiver option, ahead of James Washington, who saw just three targets but did find the end zone. It'll still be interesting going forward who acts as WR2 in Pittsburgh on a weekly basis, but Johnson has the early edge and his punt returning gives him more value. He slots in as WR32 for this week.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

It's going to be an interesting watch as far as who will be next in line for targets after Smith-Schuster, whether that's Johnson or James Washington. Johnson did miss practice with a foot injury Thursday so keep an eye on him the rest of the week with the Steelers playing on Monday night. Johnson also adds special teams value for those of you that have return yardage as well.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Diontae Johnson was one of the rookie sensations in 2020, both as a receiver and as a return specialist. For those in leagues with return yardage and touchdowns, Johnson gets an uptick in value. With Ben Roethlisberger back in the lineup, Johnson has a good opportunity to build on his 59/680/5 line from 2019.

Fantasy Downside

Johnson isn't the clear-cut No. 2 receiver in Pittsburgh. It's more of a 2A/2B scenario between Johnson and James Washington. That said, it was Johnson seeing more time on the field down the homestretch of 2019, but Washington isn't going away quietly.

2020 Bottom Line

Despite the "2A/2B" thoughts, Pittsburgh is going to run plenty of 3WR sets regardless, so there will be targets available for Johnson. Getting Pittsburgh's possible WR2 in the 10th round has the feel of tremendous sleeper value. John Paulsen also said this regarding Johnson: "Johnson fared very well in Matt Harmon’s Reception Perception charting, which I’ve found is a helpful indicator of breakout potential." Matt Harmon is one of the best when it comes to having an eye for wide receivers (Chris Godwin, anyone?). Just keep this in mind.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Baltimore Ravens
Diontae Johnson got a team-high nine targets last week, catching eight of them for 81 yards and a touchdown in his most productive game of the season. But with JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington competing for targets in a small passing pie, it's tough to figure out which Steelers receiver will be the guy each week. Johnson is the team's leading receiver on the season. but Washington has been the more valuable player in the second half. And Smith-Schuster is still the nominal No. 1. Any of the three could be the top guy -- albeit no more than a No. 2 play, at best, in a given week.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at New York Jets
Diontae Johnson got seven targets last week, catching five passes for 62 yards as the Steelers went to the air 38 times. They don't typically want to play that way, so don't expect that kind of heavy lifting from the receivers each week. Johnson isn't the deep threat James Washington is, which can limit his upside, but he's dangerous with the ball in his hands. Johnson is a flex option this week against a soft Jets pass defense.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Buffalo Bills
Diontae Johnson caught six passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, gained 16 yards on a rushing attempt and also scored on an 85-yard punt return last week. You probably didn't get credit for the return, but it was a nice outing for the rookie after three-straight quiet weeks. Devlin Hodges has spread the ball around, but he doesn't throw it much and this figures to be a low-scoring game. He's nothing more than a flex option in this one.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Arizona Cardinals
Diontae Johnson has seen 11 targets in the past two games, but has turned them into just four receptions for 43 yards, including one catch for 11 yards last week. He did gain 17 yards on a rushing attempt, but that still wasn't enough to save his day. The targets are there, so there is some hope for Johnson. But he's still not useful as anything more than a low-end flex option.
