Scouting report

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Despite missing time with injury, Diontae Johnson still led the Steelers in targets with 144. He saw double-digit targets in 10 of the 15 games he played in 2020. He also topped the team with 923 receiving yards. The Steelers showed in 2020 that there is plenty of room to feed three mouths on the outside, but Johnson may have the most upside of the three. You can make the argument he is the one of the three receivers that Ben Roethlisberger trusts the most.

Fantasy Downside

Sharing the field does also cap the ceiling for Johnson, as Chase Claypool and JuJu Smith-Schuster will still get their share. New offensive coordinator Matt Canada may also look to run the ball more as the Steelers look to get out of the basement from last season in the ground game. Johnson also led the league in dropped passes in 2020 with 10.

2021 Bottom Line

If Johnson can clean up his drops, he has a borderline chance to be a top-10 fantasy wide receiver. From our John Paulsen: "In the 12 games that he played at least 30 snaps, he averaged 6.9 receptions for 74 yards and 0.58 touchdowns, or 14.2 PPG, which are top 10 numbers." That seems worth a fifth-round pick.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs Browns

Johnson is still running as the best receiver for the Steelers, but his value this week takes a major hit with Mason Rudolph starting at quarterback this week. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if Johnson is limited this week to keep him healthy for the playoffs. As it stands now, Johnson is a near-flex option against the Browns. He did not play in the first meeting against the Browns.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs Colts

For the fourth time in five games, Johnson caught at least eight passes. In only four games all season has Johnson seen less than ten targets. Johnson has been one of the lone constants lately in Pittsburgh and slides in as a WR2 for championship week against what's been a solid but beatable Colts defense.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs Bengals

Diontae Johnson found himself in the doghouse early against the Bills with a couple of drops. He wound up playing just half of the total snaps and saw seven targets, his first game with fewer than 10 targets since Week 8. The hope is he bounces back against the Bengals. In Week 10, Johnson caught six passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Johnson comes up in our top 25 wide receivers as Pittsburgh tries to reboot their offense in time for the playoffs.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs Bills

Diontae Johnson continues to be the most-targeted wide receiver in Pittsburgh. He now has five straight games with at least ten targets and three straight games with at least eight catches. Johnson has scored at least 20 points in PPR in three of the last four games. He's become a very solid WR2 and has separated himself from the pack in Pittsburgh.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs Washington

Another week, another double-digit target day for Diontae Johnson. Unfortunately, it results in his lowest yardage total since Week 8. Needless to say, I'm sure he is happy to be done with Baltimore, though he did still have eight catches. The opportunities he gets, however, is plenty enough to give him consistent fantasy value. He's once again a WR2 and our highest-ranked Steelers wide receiver for Week 13.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs Ravens

Johnson received a healthy 16 targets against the Jaguars and caught 12 of them for 111 yards, his second straight 100-yard day. Johnson is arguably the best playmaker on the Steelers and has 37 targets and 24 catches in his last three games.
