Marques Colston comes off PUP list

Saints wide receiver Marques Colston practiced for the first time this training and has been removed from the physically-unable-to-perform list. He didn't participate fully in practice, but worked out in individual drills.

Fantasy Impact: 

We like Colston as a mid-range WR2 and he's got an ADP of the 5th round. There are a lot of balls to go around in New Orleans, but Colston has always been a big red zone target for quarterback Drew Brees.

Nick Toon, the Saints' fourth-round draft pick out of Wisconsin in 2012, not only has he come back completely healthy but he has returned stronger and wiser and that has been obvious during the first three days of preseason camp.

Much like last year, the 6-foot-4 receiver has shown flashes of being a big-play receiving threat in the Saints' offense. His size and speed have thrust him in the mix for one of the third or fourth receiver spots.

Toon stood out during Sunday's practice, the first session in pads, making several impressive catches from Drew Brees and other quarterbacks.

Fantasy Impact: 

Toon is getting time without Marques Colston participating right now. He's doing his best to create a logjam among Saints receivers, which already consists of Colston, stud TE Jimmy Graham and Lance Moore, along with RB Darren Sproles.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune said the Saints need to do a much better job of turning RB Darren Sproles loose than they did in 2012.

Just like QB Drew Brees and TE Jimmy Graham, Sproles also fell back down to earth in 2012. He was held to just 244 rushing yards, 667 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

Part of the problem was a broken hand that sidelined Sproles for three games. But the bigger issues were increased attention from opposing defenses and the Saints' overall inefficiency on offense. Sproles might benefit more than anyone if the Saints' offense returns to its usual greatness this season now that coach Sean Payton is back.

Fantasy Impact: 

It's a dangerous thought. We rank Sproles 10th on our list of PPR RBs. We project him for 94 catches and 700-plus yards with 7 TDs. His ADP is the fifth round and last year he finished 8th-best in PPR formats, so even in a down year he had value in the right format.

Matthew Stafford on verge of contract extension

Lions QB Matthew Stafford is on the verge of agreeing to a three-year contract extension that will keep him a Lion through 2017 and make him – for the second time in his short career – one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.

The 25-year-old already owns team single-season records for passing yards, touchdowns, completions and attempts, and he should break Bobby Layne’s career passing mark this fall.

He’s thrown for more than 10,000 yards the last two years, and joined Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks to top 5,000 yards in a single season in NFL history.

Fantasy Impact: 

Stafford was a bit of a disappointment last season. After throwing for 41 TDs and over 5,000 yards in 2011, he finished with 20 TDs, 17 INTs in 2012. His mechanics have come under fire, and recently Ron Jaworski of ESPN rated him just the 16th overall QB. We rank Stafford 9th among our QBs this season with an ADP of the seventh round. He's just one of a group of QBs with big upside that you can wait on and take in the middle rounds if that's the strategy you choose. And, Stafford is surrounded by enough talent that could potentially land him in the top-five when all is said and done.
