Scouting report

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 2, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Baltimore
Duke Johnson had six touches in Week 1, with three rushes and three receptions. He's clearly the team's main receiving back, as he finished with five targets, and even played nine of his 26 snaps at the wide receiver position.

The Browns may struggle to run the ball against the Ravens, which actually benefits Johnson (in PPR leagues, mostly). The RB should have a more productive day through the air against Baltimore than he did in Week 1.

Johnson should be viewed as a low-end RB2 play in PPR formats, and a RB3 in standard.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 1, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Philadelphia
Duke Johnson isn't the team's official starting running back, but he'll get plenty of opportunities to make an impact. He may not get as many carries as his counterpart Isaiah Crowell, but he'll be involved in the passing game more.

Because of Johnson's receiving ability, there's a strong chance he'll actually out-produce Crowell this game. It's a favorable matchup, and the Browns rusher can be viewed as a low-end RB2 or flex option in all formats. He does get a bump in PPR leagues.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Browns running back coach Kirby Wilson called Duke Johnson "an ultimate weapon," which obviously bodes well for him. Johnson's main weapon is as a receiver out of the backfield, which was evidenced by his 61-534-2 receiving stat line as a rookie.

Now he has another year under his belt, and a coach (Hue Jackson) who values talent like Johnson's. "He does so many different things that gives your offense a boost," Jackson said about his running back.

Fantasy Downside
Johnson isn't the only talented running back on the Browns. Isaiah Crowell is listed as the starter on the depth chart, and will see the bulk of the rushing attempts. Most of Johnson's production comes through the air, so his numbers take a bit of a dive in standard formats.

Also, Johnson only scored two touchdowns as a rookie despite playing in all 16 games. He'll need to find the endzone more often to give him added value.

Bottom Line
Considering the Browns gave up 27 points per game last season, it's likely that they'll see themselves trailing opponents rather than leading them. This bodes well for Johnson who will play in more passing sets.

When thinking about Johnson vs. Crowell, imagine Jackson's previous sets of backs -- Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill. Johnson will be similar to Bernard, but with a bit more rushing expertise.

He should be a good value in the later rounds of drafts.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs Pittsburgh

At times this year, rookie Duke Johnson has given the Cleveland offense a spark. Lately, however, Johnson has been used less frequently in relief of a suddenly hot Isaiah Crowell. In Week 16, Johnson finished with 39 total yards.

In a previous meeting with Pittsburgh, Johnson struggled in limited playing time, gathering 28 total yards. Although it is possible the Browns could be trailing and may use Johnson’s services a little more since he is a better receiver than Crowell, the Duke is not going to be delivering a championship to anyone still fighting for one, even in PPR leagues. If he is still part of your roster, make sure he is not part of your lineup.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Kansas City Chiefs

One of the few Browns who was able to get much going in Seattle last Sunday, Duke Johnson rushed for 46 yards on just four carries and caught five passes for 39 yards. Johnson tied Travis Benjamin for the team lead in targets. Isaiah Crowell still got more carries than the Duke, but the fact Cleveland was trailing for a good majority of the game helped Johnson be more productive.

And Cleveland could be facing deficits frequently in Kansas City, which gives Johnson the inside track to once again be the team’s top back. That, and the fact he is better than Crowell. But Johnson has been an erratic fantasy performer during his rookie season and the Chiefs have one of the NFL’s top run defenses. At best, he would be a low-end flex in PPR leagues. In other formats, you need to look elsewhere for production.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Seattle

Duke Johnson had his best game in quite some time last Sunday as the Browns defeated San Francisco 24-10. Johnson, mostly known for his receiving prowess, caught just one pass, but rushed for 78 yards on 13 carries.

Unfortunately for the Duke, Isaiah Crowell had an even bigger day. And Seattle has the second-best run defense in the NFL. Maybe Johnson will put up some numbers as a pass catcher when the Browns inevitably fall behind against the sizzling Seahawks, who have won four in a row, but he should be on the bench in all formats.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs San Francisco

Throughout the season, rookie Duke Johnson has been most productive as a receiver. That trend continued in Week 13, as Johnson caught four passes for 30 yards while being held to two yards on the ground. Overall, Johnson has shown promise at times, but it is hard to breakout when you are in a time share and have an indecisive head coach.

However, Johnson has decent potential this week if you are simply looking at the matchup. San Francisco has surrendered 14 rushing touchdowns. Only Atlanta and Detroit have allowed more. And the 49ers also give up 125.2 rushing yards per game. Ultimately, it would be very hard to trust Duke outside of PPR formats given his situation and the overall malaise that is the Cleveland offense, but he could offer value as a cheap daily league option.
