Scouting report

HOU RB Duke Johnson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New Orleans Saints
With Lamar Miller gone for the season, Duke Johnson is expected to receive most of the backfield touches, at least early on since Carlos Hyde just recently became part of the team. Thanks to his pass-catching ability, Johnson is a perfect fit for the Texans offense; however, he’s averaged only 75 rushing attempts per season over his first four years. The Saints had the No. 2 rush defense in ’18, so you may want to be cautious about starting Johnson, especially with the uncertainty of Hyde’s role.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Duke Johnson was a stud in 2017 when he topped 1,000 scrimmage yards with seven touchdowns and 74 receptions. His play on the field wasn’t bad in 2018, but he didn’t see nearly as many opportunities as Carlos Hyde and Nick Chubb were featured in the backfield. But when Johnson was on the field, he averaged five yards per carry and caught 47 passes for 429 yards and three touchdowns. He was a great receiving threat out of the backfield, leading the Browns in YAC (385).

Fantasy Downside
Johnson has requested a trade and has made it known he doesn’t want to stay around in Cleveland. If he does remain on the Browns, there’s a very limited role for him once Kareem Hunt returns from his suspension. Chubb is solidly in place as the starting back, and we saw what happened to Johnson’s touches in 2018 when Chubb took over (he went from averaging 33 offensive snaps per game to 26).

2019 Bottom Line
Johnson offers little value on the Browns if he stays. At best he’d be a low-end RB3/flex play in deeper PPR leagues. Johnson’s value largely depends on whether he gets traded before the season. One rumored team was the Tampa Bay Bucs, and if he lands there then his value should go up as it’s a better opportunity than what he has in Cleveland. Johnson isn’t much more than a gamble play later on in fantasy drafts.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Duke Johnson wasn't awful last week, finishing with 53 total yards. He also had four receptions which was more than he had in the previous three games combined. The fact this was one of Johnson's better games this season tells you he's not really worth fantasy consideration this week, even though it's a great matchup. He had just 39 yards on three touches when he played the Bengals earlier in the year.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Denver Broncos

Duke Johnson went the wrong direction last week, finishing with negative six yards. Amazingly he finished the game with no receptions as he now has seven total catches over the last four weeks. It's safe to say Johnson is pretty much off the fantasy radar at this point.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Carolina Panthers

Duke Johnson had no carries last week, and caught just two of three targets for 12 yards. Johnson has 12 total touches in his last three games combined, making it difficult for him to really make an impact. He's mostly off the fantasy radar at this point.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Duke Johnson at Houston Texans

Duke Johnson had a huge two-touchdown performance in the first game after Hue Jackson was fired, leading us to believe he'll be used more often. That hasn't quite been the case, especially last week when he had just three total touches.

Johnson doesn't carry too much fantasy relevance this week vs. Houston. He's a low-end RB3 option or flex play.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Cincinnati Bengals

Duke Johnson has benefited the most in Hue Jackson's absence. He was barely used at all during Jackson's run in 2018, but since then has had his best fantasy games of the season. Before the bye week, Johnson caught all four of his touches for 31 yards with a score, and added 15 yards on three carries.

Johnson clearly has more value in PPR formats, where he can be viewed as a low-end RB2 option vs. the Bengals. Cincinnati is giving up the third-most fantasy points to opposing backs, so this should be a favorable game for Johnson.
