Scouting report

NYG RB Elijhaa Penny - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New England Patriots

Elijhaa Penny had three carries for 15 yards last week against the Vikings, adding nine yards on a reception. Penny should get a boost in snaps if Wayne Gallman misses the game Thursday night against the Patriots due to the concussion he suffered on Sunday, but fantasy owners should note that after Gallman went out early, Penny ended up playing only 36% of the offensive snaps while Jonathan Hilliman was on the field for 64%. Penny will likely play a change-of-pace role behind Hilliman or Gallman, depending on Gallman’s status, and since he’s traditionally played like more of a fullback, he’s unlikely to be a consistent fantasy option. He should remain on waivers.

NYG RB Elijhaa Penny - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Washington Redskins

Elijhaa Penny had two carries and three yards against the Cowboys in the season-opener, but he’s only carried the ball nine times in the last two seasons combined, but he’s one of only two healthy running backs currently on the Giants’ roster. Unless they add someone else, that makes him worth at least a speculative add to rosters in super deep leagues. It’s very possible Wayne Gallman stinks, and if that’s the case, they might look to Penny, who averaged 4.0 yards on 31 carries for the Cardinals as a rookie in 2017. If he doesn’t cost you anything, he’s an interesting stash, but shouldn’t be in lineups until we see how he’s going to be used.

ARI RB Elijhaa Penny - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

As Fansided.com noted, Penny, an undrafted free agent in 2016, got to showcase himself a bit towards the end of last season. The 6-foot-22, 234-pound power back carried the ball 31 times for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. He's a bruising between-the-tackles type who lacks breakaway speed.

Fantasy Downside

The addition of rookie Chase Edmonds, who is quickly establishing himself as the first option behind David Johnson, will relegate Penny to reserve status.

2018 Bottom Line

At this point, it appears multiple injuries to players ahead of him on the depth chart would be necessary for Penny to garner a fantasy-worthy role.

ARI RB Elijhaa Penny - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. New York Giants

Elijhaa Penny got 10 carries last week against Washington and averaged 4.5 yards. He is still battling Kerwynn Williams for work, but with a quad injury leaving Williams’ status in question, Penny might be worth considering for needy fantasy owners. If Williams starts again, Penny has too much risk to consider, but if the quad injury keeps him out of action, Penny could be a sneaky option against a Giants team that has allowed 11 touchdowns to opposing running backs this season.
