JAX QB Gardner Minshew - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The trade of Nick Foles to Chicago this offseason was good news for Minshew. As a rookie who was just trying to find his way onto the field, Minshew quietly had at least 16 points in eight of his 12 starts in 2019. Minshew is also more mobile than he gets credit for -- he had at least 27 rushing yards in eight games -- but he will benefit from the pass-first mentality of new QB coach Ben McAdoo and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden. It will be Gruden's job to revitalize the offense with a more potent vertical passing game all while helping develop Minshew into a more polished quarterback. The belief is Gruden's West Coast offense scheme is a good fit for the second-year QB and should create more scoring opportunities.

Fantasy Downside
That's necessary because the Jaguars ranked near the bottom of the league last season in scoring at 26th (18.6) and were 31st in red zone TD scoring percentage (40.43).

2020 Bottom Line
The good news? Gruden's offense is designed around play-action passing, taking shots downfield and quick reads by the quarterback. Remember, Minshew flashed big-play ability, throwing 21 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Worth noting: His 129.0 QB Rating on passes that traveled at least 20 yards in the air was the best in the NFL, while Patrick Mahomes was the runner-up with a 122.9 QB rating.

JAX QB Gardner Minshew - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Indianapolis Colts
At Atlanta last week, Gardner Minshew completed only 42% of his 31 attempts, finishing with 181 yards and a TD. After starting off his career with stellar accuracy he now has failed to complete half of his passes in three contests. In Week 12 at Indy Nick Foles aired it out 47 times for 296 yards and two TDs but look for the Jaguars to have a more balanced attack at home in the rematch. Minshew remains just a WR2 play.

JAX QB Gardner Minshew - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Atlanta Falcons
In the last-minute win at Oakland last week, Gardner Minshew threw for just over 200 yards and two scores, both to Chris Conley. The Jaguars struggled to move the ball until the two fourth-quarter touchdown drives that led to the victory. In 12 contests this season Minshew has two 300-yard performances and should have his top WR in D.J. Chark back on Sunday. Despite facing the No. 23 Falcons pass defense, he remains a QB2 option.

JAX QB Gardner Minshew - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Oakland Raiders
Facing a solid Chargers pass defense last week, Gardner Minshew and the Jaguars fell behind early. The rookie threw 37 passes but for just 162 yards, a career-low 4.4 yards-per-attempt average. It was also the fewest yards Minshew has thrown for in a contest he’s started. The Raiders have the fifth-worst pass defense so expect a better performance from Minshew, although he may be without top WR D.J. Chark. He should be considered a QB2 option.

JAX QB Gardner Minshew - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
After replacing Nick Foles in the second half of the loss to the Bucs last week, Gardner Minshew gave the Jaguars offense some life, finishing with 147 yards and a TD, but a late INT that bounced off of Dede Westbrook’s hands near the end zone ended the comeback attempt. In the 10 games he’s played in this season Minshew is averaging 243 yards through the air with five multi-touchdown performances. Even though he’ll be at home Minshew will be facing a Chargers defense that is the fourth-best against the pass. Therefore, consider him a QB2 option.

JAX QB Gardner Minshew - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Houston Texans
After not doing much for fantasy owners the previous two weeks, last Sunday in the win over the Jets, Gardner Minshew threw for 279 yards and a career-high three scores. His accuracy was back up to 65% and he’s tossed at least one TD in seven of his eight pro contests. Despite having just the one 300-yard outing, the rookie has taken care of the ball, with just two picks versus 13 touchdowns. Minshew won’t have to worry about J.J. Watt and will be going against a Texans D that has struggled against the pass. He is a low QB1 play in London.

JAX QB Gardner Minshew - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. New York Jets
At Cincinnati last Sunday, Gardner Minshew finished only 15-of-32 but threw for 255 yards with a TD. After being touted for his accuracy, it was the second straight game he failed to complete at least half of his attempts. While Minshew has tossed just two INTs, he’s passed for less than 280 yards in all but one outing. The Jets struggle against the pass so consider the rookie a low QB1 start.
