Scouting report

SEA QB Geno Smith - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs Saints

Geno Smith had his first start in four years in Week 6 and...it was okay. He went 23/32 for 209 yards and a touchdown but it took a while for the Seahawks offense to get going in Pittsburgh. It's clear the offense is going to take a dive until Russell Wilson returns. Rumors were already swirling that the Seahawks were possibly eyeing Cam Newton. This is going to be a rough stretch for the Seahawks, though they do have the Jaguars in Week 8 before their Week 9 bye. As for Week 7 against the Saints, Smith just cracks our top 25 but you're likely only starting him if your team is ravaged by all the bye weeks.

SEA QB Geno Smith - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs Steelers

With Russell Wilson missing his first game ever in the NFL, Geno Smith makes his first start since 2017 when he was with the Giants. He actually looked okay in his spot performance against the Rams, going 10/17 for 131 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also had a few extra days of rest and prep with the Seahawks playing on Thursday night in Week 5. All that said, we're not expecting Smith to set the scene on fire, checking in at No. 23 among quarterbacks. Smith hasn't had a 300-yard passing game since 2014 and has only reached the mark three times in his career. Maybe this week will be No. 4? Maybe. Maybe not.

NYG QB Geno Smith - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Oakland Raiders

Geno Smith will make his first start for the Giants this week following the surprise benching of Eli Manning. The Giants offense has been terrible this season, but Smith has a little upside going up against the Raiders. Oakland gives up the sixth-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this year, and they have a good enough offense to keep the Giants throwing. That being said, Geno has never been a steady fantasy producer, even when healthy, so it’s hard to trust him. He should probably stay on waivers.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - Week 7, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs Baltimore
Geno Smith will make his first start for the Jets since 2014. He has a career 58% completion rate and has thrown for 5,867 yards with 27 TDs and 36 INTs. This might be Smith's last chance to make it in the NFL. The good news is that he can't be much worse than Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2016.

Smith will face a Ravens defense that is 14th in aFPA to quarterbacks. He should have some opportunities to make plays downfield, but he has to stay away from turnovers which has been an issue for him.

Smith should not be in any starting lineup and probably not even on a roster at this point. One bad game could be Fitzpatrick back behind center or even Bryce Petty.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Jets want Geno Smith to succeed so they will give him an opportunity to win the starting job. They are hoping new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey can deliver some of his quarterback magic and help Smith find his way. Smith does have some physical abilities including mobility and a strong arm, so New York thinks those things can help him be successful. The Jets also went in the offseason and brought in better skill players to help their QB.

Fantasy Downside
Smith's numbers through his first two seasons have not been very good. He has thrown 25 TDs and 34 INTs while averaging only 189 yards per game. Smith is still having trouble with his reads, accuracy and suffers from a lack of confidence. There is plenty of downside for the former second round pick.

Bottom Line
There is a good chance Smith will be the starter come Week 1. But the leash will be short. With a veteran in Ryan Fitzpatrick breathing down his neck, Smith could feel the pressure, and we have seen adversely affect him in the past. There is no reason to draft him because of all the uncertainty.

UPDATE:
Geno Smith sustained a broken jaw when Ikemefuna Enemkpali punched the Jets QB. Smith will be out 6 to 10 weeks. Obviously, Smith was not an impact fantasy player before the incident, but now he will not even be discussed until it's closer to his return. Ryan Fitzpatrick will become the starter and if he has some success, we might not see Smith on the field as Jet again.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17: Smith vs Dolphins

The last three weeks have told the story about Geno Smith since his return. He has averaged 28 passes per game and thrown three TD passes and 2 INTs. Not very exciting and not very enticing for fantasy owners.

It could be even worse this week as Smith will face the Dolphins who are 8th in aFPA to quarterbacks and have shut down Smith in three previous meetings (Zero TD passes). Smith will end the season playing a lot better than he did the first half of the year, but not enough to be considered a fantasy option. Keep him on the bench for Week 17.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16: Smith vs Patriots

Geno Smith has played better since his return to the starting lineup. Although he has only thrown two touchdowns during the four-game span, he has also only thrown two interceptions which was a major criticism earlier in the season. Against the Patriots back in Week 7, Smith played well throwing for 226 yards, a touchdown and zero picks.

New England is ranked 17th in aFPA to quarterbacks so the matchup is neutral, but even with the better late-season performances, Smith is not a fantasy option. Keep him on the bench.
