Fantasy Upside
Geno Smith is officially the starter in New York, and the Jets feel he is the future as well. Smith had some positives his rookie season. Six of his first eight games he threw for over 200 yards and his pass percentage was decent for a rookie. In his last four games, he led the Jets to a 3-1 record while only throwing two interceptions during that span. The Jets went out and upgraded their receiving corp for 2014, so that should also help his overall numbers. Smith can also run the football which he did not do as much as the Jets would have liked last season. With a year under his belt, his decision making should help him increase the runs per game.
Fantasy Downside
There were growing pains for Smith last season. The 21 interceptions were a sign of that notion. He also only threw 12 touchdowns. Although he has won the starting job, if he struggles early, the Jets could go to Michael Vick. And if Vick has success, Smith might not get back on the field.
Bottom Line
Rookie quarterbacks are tough to judge long term because of all the factors involved. Smith was pretty typical with peaks and valleys last season. The Vick factor is what concerns me most. The Jets expect to make the playoffs and with a solid defense, that is not far-fetched. Even if Smith is the long-term answer, the team will switch quickly if losses pile up early. Smith is not getting drafted in many leagues because of his numbers and job security. He really is not worth a roster spot to start the season outside of 2QB leagues and deep formats.
