Scouting report

NYJ QB Geno Smith - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4: Smith vs Lions
Geno Smith threw the ball 43 times for 316 which is great for fantasy owners, but probably not so good for the Jets. Don't expect that to become common. He only had one touchdown and two interceptions so it wasn't all rosy for Smith.

Jets face one of the best defenses in the NFL. The Lions have been especially hard on quarterbacks this season and shut down Aaron Rodgers last week. Don't expect much from Smith this week. He should not be anywhere near a starting lineup.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3: Smith vs Bears
After an impressive Week 1, Geno Smith came back down to earth with a 2013-like performance. Granted, he only turned the ball over once, but his completion rate fell from 82% to 50% from Week 1 to Week 2.

Smith will face a Bears defense that did a great job of shutting down the 49ers during the second half last week. The Chicago defense was expected to be improved and looked that way in Week 2.

More Week 1 performances for Smith will raise his fantasy stock, but every time he has a Week 2 performance, he takes a step back. No reason to start him against the Bears in Week 3. He rates a QB2.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2: Smith vs Packers
It was a strong start to the 2014 season for Geno Smith who completed 82% of his passes for a respectable 221 yards. He did throw one pick and fumbled the ball early in the game, but overall he was outstanding.

The Jets are hoping this becomes the norm, but don't just bet on that yet. We need to see more of a sample size to say Smith has turned the corner.

His fantasy status still is at a low-end QB2 and the Packers could present some challenges to him. No reason to start Smith yet.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1: Smith vs Raiders
Many expect Geno Smith to improve significantly from his rookie year. For his fantasy owners, they better hope he does it quickly. Michael Vick is ready to become the starter and if Smith struggles early, it could happen.

He has the ability to start off strong with a pretty bad Raiders pass defense. If he doesn't put up good numbers in Week 1, then you might want to start looking at Vick on the waiver wire.

Smith actually rates as a low-end No. 2 for Week 1, but there is still a lot of questions surrounding his 2014 status.

NYJ QB Geno Smith - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Geno Smith is officially the starter in New York, and the Jets feel he is the future as well. Smith had some positives his rookie season. Six of his first eight games he threw for over 200 yards and his pass percentage was decent for a rookie. In his last four games, he led the Jets to a 3-1 record while only throwing two interceptions during that span. The Jets went out and upgraded their receiving corp for 2014, so that should also help his overall numbers. Smith can also run the football which he did not do as much as the Jets would have liked last season. With a year under his belt, his decision making should help him increase the runs per game.

Fantasy Downside
There were growing pains for Smith last season. The 21 interceptions were a sign of that notion. He also only threw 12 touchdowns. Although he has won the starting job, if he struggles early, the Jets could go to Michael Vick. And if Vick has success, Smith might not get back on the field.

Bottom Line
Rookie quarterbacks are tough to judge long term because of all the factors involved. Smith was pretty typical with peaks and valleys last season. The Vick factor is what concerns me most. The Jets expect to make the playoffs and with a solid defense, that is not far-fetched. Even if Smith is the long-term answer, the team will switch quickly if losses pile up early. Smith is not getting drafted in many leagues because of his numbers and job security. He really is not worth a roster spot to start the season outside of 2QB leagues and deep formats.
