Bucs hopeful Russell Gage and Gio Bernard will play Week 1

The Buccaneers are hopeful and feeling good about the Week 1 availability for WR Russell Gage (hamstring) and RB Giovani Bernard (ankle).

Fantasy Impact: 

"Bowles said Bernard has been 'moving around well' — with the hope that the team will have him available for the regular-season opener," wrote Crane. Bernard is recovering from an ankle injury suffered in the first preseason game against the Dolphins. He is currently RB101 in Underdog drafts.

As for Gage, he was able to practice a couple of days this week and said he feels good. His hamstring injury came during joint practices with the Dolphins. Gage is currently being drafted on Underdog as WR60, as he, presumably, has Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Julio Jones all ahead of him.

Fantasy Impact: 

This comes on the back of Greg Auman of the Athletic, labeling Gio Bernard as a likely cut candidate ahead of the season's start. Two completely unrelated sources are projecting Rachaad White with a significant —mostly third-down— role, and where there is smoke, there is often fire. If White has a firm grasp of the role, there's not a very good chance Fournette duplicates his 84 target performance from 2021.

The Bucs are strongly considering a bare-bones, three-RB depth chart heading into the season; Leonard Fournette, rookie Rachaad White, and Ke'Shawn Vaughn.

Fantasy Impact: 

While Bernard likely didn't offer any intrinsic fantasy value himself, this does open up the door for more playing time behind Fournette for the rookie and the former 2020 3rd-round pick. Rachaad White will likely be the biggest winner, rotating with Fournette, who finished 12th in backfield touch% last season. If Fournette were to suffer an injury, the team would assuredly make a move in free agency with such a thin depth chart.

Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones (ankle) and WRs Breshad Perriman (hip/abdomen) and Cyril Grayson (hamstring) did not practice Thursday. RB Giovani Bernard (hip/knee) was limited.

Fantasy Impact: 

Leonard Fournette is practicing and looks to be an option off IR this week, which means RoJo can sit out again and Bernard can be the receiving back. Perriman and Grayson not practicing thins an already small receiver room in Tampa that could see Mike Evans shadowed by Jalen Ramsey Sunday.
