MIN TE Irv Smith Jr. - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Green Bay

Prior to last week’s bye, Irv Smith Jr. quietly had consecutive games of five targets in which he had stat lines of 4-64 and 4-55 respectively. On a team that desperately needs a third receiving option, Smith Jr. seems to be stepping into that role and his production is that of a low-end TE1 during that time frame. Even though Green Bay is ranked sixth in aFPA to TEs this season, if Smith Jr. can continue to produce as he has been, he’s very can very much be a low-end TE1 in a position group that lacks production outside the top-three guys.

MIN TE Irv Smith Jr. - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs Atlanta

In a season where Smith Jr. has done nothing, Week 5 saw him “explode” for four receptions and 64 yards on five targets. A completely random outburst from the second-year TE is hopefully a sign of things to come as he was pegged my many this offseason as a breakout candidate. With a receiving group that provides little depth behind Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson, Smith Jr. has little competition for targets, making him a viable TE2 candidate this week against Atlanta.

MIN TE Irv Smith Jr. - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Chicago Bears

We expect the Vikings to play their backups in this game with nothing to play for, and it's not clear where Irv Smith Jr. falls into that. He's technically second-string, but he is a big part of their offense, playing in at least 60% of their offensive snaps since Week 8. Even if he does play, he hasn't been a solid receiving threat in 2019. We'd avoid playing him against the Bears.

MIN TE Irv Smith Jr. - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Seattle Seahawks

Irv Smith Jr. caught his first touchdown last week, finishing with a 3-20-1 line. He's averaging just 23 yards per game, and has only scored once. He's not a strong option at tight end, even though he gets a great matchup against the Seahawks this week.

MIN TE Irv Smith Jr. - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Denver Broncos

Irv Smith Jr. finished 5-34 on six targets last week. He's getting more involved as a receiver, but still has no touchdowns on the season. He's averaging just 24 yards per game, so his impact is minimal.

MIN TE Irv Smith Jr. - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Dallas Cowboys

Irv Smith Jr. finished 4-33 last week as he's slowly becoming more productive in this offense. He's still battling with Kyle Rudolph for touches, though, making it difficult for him to have a big game. He doesn't get many yards, and he hasn't scored a touchdown all season. He's a weak option at TE.

MIN TE Irv Smith Jr. - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Kansas City Chiefs

If the Vikings tight ends combined their numbers, they'd be worth consideration in fantasy this year. But neither Irv Smith Jr. or Kyle Rudolph are doing enough on their own week-to-week to warrant starting them in fantasy.
