Scouting report

KC RB Isiah Pacheco - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Isiah Pacheco finished with 960 scrimmage yards as a rookie, which is impressive considering he didn’t really get a sizable role until Week 10 of the season. From Week 10 on, Pacheco finished as fantasy RB18. In that nine game span, Pacheco averaged 83.3 scrimmage yards per game with four total touchdowns. Heading into 2023, Pacheco is expected to maintain the same role he had down the stretch considering not much changed with Kansas City’s backfield. Pacheco will be the starting back in one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL.

Fantasy Downside
Pacheco was a decent enough runner in 2022, but he caught just 13 passes in 17 games. Jerick McKinnon was the receiving threat, and ended up being the red zone threat as well with nine receiving touchdowns, including eight in the final six games of the season. McKinnon returns to the backfield in 2023, which means Pacheco will hardly have any value as a receiver. There’s also Clyde Edwards-Helaire returning from injury this season. CEH was on injured reserve at the end of the season when Pacheco had most of his production.

2023 Bottom Line
Pacheco will likely get the bulk of the carries for the Chiefs this season, but McKinnon and CEH are no jokes. McKinnon will limit Pacheco’s usage as a receiving back, and CEH could make enough of an impact to limit Pacheco’s full ceiling. Still, Pacheco was a pretty consistent runner when it came to yards last season, finishing with at least 60 yards in all eight of the last nine games of the season. Pacheco has RB2 appeal, which could increase if he becomes more of a red zone threat. He should be viewed in the RB25-RB30 range for redraft leagues.

KC RB Isiah Pacheco - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Denver Broncos

Isiah Pacheco had another solid game last game, finishing with 58 yards on the ground and 32 yards on a catch (with two targets) for 90 total scrimmage yards. Since mostly taking over the backfield in Week 10, Pacheco has averaged 91 scrimmage yards per game. The downside is he's only scored two touchdowns in that span (seven games) and is averaging 1.1 receptions. He has been fairly consistent yardage-wise though, so he'll provide a nice floor option in Week 17 against the Broncos. When he faced Denver just a few weeks ago (Week 14), he finished with 93 scrimmage yards. He should have a similar type of performance with good yardage, but a low chance of scoring or getting many receptions. He'll be a low-end RB2 option for Week 17.

KC RB Isiah Pacheco - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Isiah Pacheco had a solid outing again last week, rushing 15 times for 86 yards while catching one pass for 11 yards. He also added 47 yards on kick returns. Pacheco has played well since earning the starting job in Week 10. In that time he's averaged 91.2 scrimmage yards per game. Unfortunately though he doesn't get many receptions, which limits him in PPR formats, and he doesn't score many touchdowns which hurts his overall value. Still, there's something safe about starting someone who is likely to finish with around 80 yards. Plus, this week he draws a favorable matchup against the Seahawks who have given up the second-most average fantasy points to running backs this season. Pacheco can be viewed as a strong RB2 option for Week 16.

KC RB Isiah Pacheco - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Houston Texans

Isiah Pacheco had another solid outing last week. He ran for 70 yards and caught three passes for 23 yards off of three targets. Pacheco hasn't become a PPR beast, but the Chiefs are starting to utilize him as a receiver a little more as Pacheco has 56 receiving yards in last three games. He had just 13 receiving yards in his first 10 games of the season. Pacheco has really started to take over since Clyde Edwards-Helaire got hurt in Week 11. In the four games since CEH's injury, Pacheco is averaging 92 scrimmage yards with two total touchdowns. Pacheco should keep up his high level of production this week in a favorable matchup against the Texans who have given up the most average fantasy points to opposing running backs this year. Pacheco can be viewed as a low-end RB1 play for Week 15.

KC RB Isiah Pacheco - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Denver Broncos

Isiah Pacheco had a solid game last week, rushing for 66 yards with a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 16 yards. And if you play in leagues with return yards, Pacheco added 116 yards there as well. Pacheco has been a solid option at RB ever since Clyde Edwards-Helaire's injury. In the three games since CEH got hurt (counting Week 11 when he played 5 snaps, Pacheco is averaging 91.7 scrimmage yards with two total touchdowns. He doesn't get a great matchup this week against Denver (7th aFPA), but he should still be viewed as a solid RB2 play. Pacheco has seen at least 15 touches in every game since CEH's injury, giving him enough volume to trust him in fantasy.

KC RB Isiah Pacheco - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Cincinnati Bengals

Isiah Pacheco certainly saw plenty of opportunities last week, rushing 22 times for a nice 69 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a pass (!) for 17 yards, just his fourth reception this season. Pacheco also scored his first touchdown since Week 1 this season, which is an area he'll need to maintain consistency in if he's going to be anything more than a flex option in fantasy. The script should be similar for Pacheco moving forward into an OK matchup vs. the Bengals (14th aFPA) in Week 13. He should be viewed as a low-end RB2 or a strong RB3/flex option.

KC RB Isiah Pacheco - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Isiah Pacheco once again held a clear lead in Kansas City's backfield when it comes to running the ball. Last week he ran 15 times for 107 yards, becoming the first Chiefs back to rush for 100 yards since Week 4 of last year. Although he once again failed to score a touchdown, and once again saw no targets. Pacheco has seen zero targets in eight of his 10 games played, which really limits his scoring when it comes to PPR formats. He could be utilized a little more this week as Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been placed on injured reserve, but we'd still expect Jerick McKinnon to handle most of the receiving duties. Still, Pacheco has shown enough to make him a valuable RB2/flex option. We'd like him more if he had a better matchup, but he unfortunately faces the Rams who have given up the 5th-fewest average fantasy points to opposing running backs.
