Fantasy Upside
Isiah Pacheco finished with 960 scrimmage yards as a rookie, which is impressive considering he didn’t really get a sizable role until Week 10 of the season. From Week 10 on, Pacheco finished as fantasy RB18. In that nine game span, Pacheco averaged 83.3 scrimmage yards per game with four total touchdowns. Heading into 2023, Pacheco is expected to maintain the same role he had down the stretch considering not much changed with Kansas City’s backfield. Pacheco will be the starting back in one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL.
Fantasy Downside
Pacheco was a decent enough runner in 2022, but he caught just 13 passes in 17 games. Jerick McKinnon was the receiving threat, and ended up being the red zone threat as well with nine receiving touchdowns, including eight in the final six games of the season. McKinnon returns to the backfield in 2023, which means Pacheco will hardly have any value as a receiver. There’s also Clyde Edwards-Helaire returning from injury this season. CEH was on injured reserve at the end of the season when Pacheco had most of his production.
2023 Bottom Line
Pacheco will likely get the bulk of the carries for the Chiefs this season, but McKinnon and CEH are no jokes. McKinnon will limit Pacheco’s usage as a receiving back, and CEH could make enough of an impact to limit Pacheco’s full ceiling. Still, Pacheco was a pretty consistent runner when it came to yards last season, finishing with at least 60 yards in all eight of the last nine games of the season. Pacheco has RB2 appeal, which could increase if he becomes more of a red zone threat. He should be viewed in the RB25-RB30 range for redraft leagues.
