Scouting report

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Los Angeles Chargers

It's almost incredible, but after two weeks of the season, James Robinson is the overall RB5 in Half PPR scoring. Last week, Robinson carried the ball 23 times for just 64 yards, while his two receptions only brought him another 14. But he found the endzone again, giving him three scores in 2022, which saw him post 14.8 fantasy points in Week 2, good for RB6 for the week.

Despite his lofty start to the campaign, it's hard to look at Robinson as anything above an RB2 this week against the Chargers. His workload is encouraging, but his productivity isn't that great. The Chargers are 19th in rushing yards allowed to running backs this season, but lead the NFL after allowing two running back receiving touchdowns.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Indianapolis Colts

It was a wonder to many that James Robinson even took the field in Week 1. It was therefore incredible that he ended up leading the Jaguars with 11 rushing attempts, from which he amassed 66 yards and a touchdown. Robinson wasn't an explosive option in the passing game, catching just one of his two targets for three yards, but this catch also brought him another touchdown. Robinson finished Week 1 with 19.4 fantasy points in Half PPR formats, which was enough to make him the RB4 in Week 1.

The Colts were fairly solid against the Texans running backs in Week 1, allowing just 73 yards on 25 carries and 41 yards on a combined seven receptions. Robinson has the upper hand in the backfield for the Jaguars for now, and that should keep him fantasy relevant while keeping him from superstar status. Despite his Week 1 heroics, he's a high-end RB3 option this week.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Washington Commanders

2021 was a tough season for James Robinson, in more ways than one. He started the season in Urban Meyer's doghouse, for reasons best known only to Meyer. Yet he continued to produce whenever he got the chance. Robinson rushed for 767 yards and scored eight touchdowns, catching 31 passes for another 222 yards. He finished as an RB1 four times in only 14 games, finishing the season as the RB24 in Half PPR formats. But he suffered an Achilles injury late in the season, robbing him of much of the last three games.

Robinson has recovered remarkably quickly and looks set to be on the field in Week 1. His former role as a bell-cow in the Jaguars backfield can no longer be assumed, however, given the presence of Travis Etienne. Both are likely to see plenty of work, but early season uncertainty makes them both hard to trust. It's a shame, as the Commanders were not exactly a shutdown unit against RBs in 2021, ranking 15th in aFPA for the position. Consider Robinson an RB4 this week.

JAX RB James Robinson - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
James Robinson, coming off a partially torn Achilles suffered last December, was surprisingly not on the team's PUP list to open training camp. “James is doing extremely well. He’s going to be out here and over here,” head coach Doug Pederson said. “We’re just going to still take it slow with him and make sure he’s 100 percent -- or better -- before we put him out on the field.” But Pederson noted that Robinson not going on the PUP list “says a lot” about the running back’s rehab process. Pederson added he’s “hopeful” Robinson will be cleared by mid-August. In two seasons as the Jags starting running back, Robinson, an undrafted free agent out of Illinois State, has rushed for 1,837 yards on 404 carries with 15 rushing touchdowns. Remember, speaking at the NFL Owners' meeting in March, Pederson said he envisions Robinson being a three-down back when healthy.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Even if he's fully healthy to open the season, a true three-down role seems unlikely with Travis Etienne Jr., coming of a Lisfranc injury, well ahead of Robinson in terms of his recovery. The addition of rookie Snoop Conner adds to the intrigue.

2022 Bottom Line
Drafting Robinson at his current ADP is not cost-prohibitive -- especially if you believe Pederson's history of using multiple backs will continue in Jacksonville. Drafting him as an RB4 definitely makes sense if you expect him to eventually emerge as the 1A to Etienne’s 1B. Whatever the ultimate outcome, expecting an immediate contribution seems like a reach.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 @ New York Jets
Finally liberated from the petty chains of Urban Meyer, James Robinson was back to his workhorse self under interim Head Coach Darrell Bevell. Robinson saw 18 carries and six targets in his first game since Meyer's firing, turning that into 21 total touches for 88 total yards and a rushing touchdown. Now that's more like it. Meyer's insistence on limiting Robinson's workload always seemed to be more of a power trip for the old college coach than anything else, as Robinson has shown himself to be by far the best skill position player on Jacksonville this year when healthy. The revamped coaching staff appears to realize this, and now Robinson gets a pillow-soft matchup for RBs in the poor Jets defense. Robinson looks like a borderline RB1 now that Meyer is unemployed.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Houston Texans

James Robinson was completely neutralized along with the rest of the Jaguar offense in Week 14. Robinson only gained four yards from scrimmage on six carries and didn't see a target in the passing game. Robinson continues to be the clear lead back for the Jags, but the horrific offensive environment he is playing in gives him an extremely low floor, as shown by his performance against the Titans. Week 15 will bring the most favorable matchup Robinson will see all season in the Texans, who just got gashed for 137 yards and two scores by first-round bust Rashaad Penny last week against Seattle. Last week's box score is scary, but there is almost no way Robinson will have a repeat performance against a defense as terrible as they have in Houston. Robinson is still in the flex conversation despite the recent struggles.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Tennessee Titans
James Robinson had a disastrous Week 13 where he lost a fumble and only managed 35 total yards on nine touches. Robinson was actually benched for a long stretch of the game after losing the early fumble, only to return to take needless hits in a blowout loss. Robinson should remain the lead back in Jacksonville moving forward, but it's clear that any missteps will draw the ire of Urban Meyer and his coaching staff, making Robinson a more risky proposition than previously thought. This week, Robinson takes on a middling Titans defense and should see enough volume to warrant a start in fantasy as an RB3.
