Scouting report

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5: Witten vs. Texans
Jason Witten is only averaging about 6 targets per game through the first quarter of the season and more importantly, he is not getting in the end zone. Romo has been focusing on the receivers in the red zone and they are scoring the touchdowns.

Don't give up on Witten just yet. He still has some gas left in the tank. However, he is not a good play this week against a Texans defense that has limited tight end production. Keep Witten on the bench.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4: Witten vs Saints
Jason Witten is still not putting up the numbers we are used to from him. Three weeks without reaching the end zone and he was only targeted five times on Sunday which was a season-low.

Witten will face a Saints team that has been average against tight ends so far this season. It might be a chance for him to break out a little. We see Witten as a high-end TE2, but if you think he can is due for a big game, you could probably slip him into your lineup.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3: Witten vs Rams
Jason Witten was targeted by Tony Romo again on Sunday, but the results the past two weeks have not been there. He has a total of 6 catches for 48 yards which is usually a normal half for the veteran tight end. Is he finally on the decline? We will keep watching with interest.

For Week 3 against the Rams, Witten is only middle range TE2. If you drafted him as your No. 1 this season, you might end up being disappointed.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2: Witten vs Titans
Jason Witten had a tough Week 1 with only 2 catches. Don't read much into that because he will still be a safety blanket for Tony Romo.

Witten will face a tough Tennessee pass defense this week, however tight ends had some decent results against the Titans last season.

For Week 2, Witten rates a low-end TE1, but that means he should be helpful this week and should get back to his normal numbers.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1: Witten vs 49ers
It's eventually going to happen. Jason Witten will not be TE1. But not this season. He continues to be Tony Romo's safety blanket and continues to put up great numbers, especially in PPR leagues.

Even with the matchup against San Francisco not being a good one, he still rates a starter for Week 1. Keep an eye on guys like Witten who eventually will decline.

DAL TE Jason Witten - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Tony Romo loves to find Jason Witten, especially when he is in trouble. Witten continues to be effective although he is not in the same category as the impact tight ends. But he still catches 80 balls a season and he will get in the end zone. Witten has aged gracefully and if he is healthy, we will see more of the game.

Fantasy Downside
Health and age are the things fantasy owners should worry about with Witten. He still can do things that make him valuable if he can stay on the field. The Cowboys will try to get more players involved in the offense which could bring Witten's numbers down slightly.

Bottom Line
Witten is as consistent as they come. He is still a solid No. 1 fantasy tight end and will continue to be one. One has to wonder when his numbers will start to regress, but the Cowboys don't really have another option for his role. Witten has an ADP of 71 which is about where he should be selected unless you think the regression is starting in 2014.
