Scouting report

DEN RB Javonte Williams - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
We had been expecting the Broncos to make a move on one of their running backs, and they did eventually cut Samaje Perine, though Javonte Williams still looks like a spoke in an RBBC wheel. We'll see how much of a share he demands after a disappointing eight-carry game in Week 1. Williams should be a fringe RB3/4 this week.

DEN RB Javonte Williams - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 @ Seattle Seahawks
We had been expecting the Broncos to make a move on one of their running backs, and they did eventually cut Samaje Perine, though Javonte Williams still looks like a spoke in an RBBC wheel. We'll see how much of a share he demands, but this is a good spot to find out as the Seahawks were very soft against the run last year. Williams should be a fringe RB2/3 this week.

DEN RB Javonte Williams - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Javonte Williams will be one more year removed from his 2022 ACL tear as he heads into 2024. Back in 2021, Williams was a fantasy stud as a rookie, earning 254 opportunities (rushes + targets) en route to the overall RB17 finish in half-PPR leagues. He is part of a convoluted backfield at the moment, but if he can take over the No. 1 role, he can allow the rest of the depth chart to fight for scraps.

Fantasy Downside
Williams looked like a shell of his former self last season, earning 3.6 YPC and a 46th-ranked 2.71 yards created after contact. His subsequent 9.7 half-PPR points per game landed him as the RB32, boosted by his 55 targets. Granted, he may have rushed back to the field before he was ready, but that didn't stop the team from adding Audric Estime in the draft while retaining both Samaje Perine and Jaleel McLaughlin. He could be a complete stay-away in a loaded backfield depth chart.

2024 Bottom Line
We've been expecting the Broncos to make a move on one of their running backs, but they have stood pat, and Williams looks like a spoke in an RBBC wheel as it stands. What's worse, Williams could very well end up being the lead back, but it will be on a team that is projected to score the third-lowest points across the entirety of the NFL season.

DEN RB Javonte Williams - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
Javonte Williams' workhorse usage has tapered down in recent weeks. Williams still led the backfield in Week 16 against the Patriots, but he only got 14 opportunities (11 carries and three targets). Williams can be counted on for double-digit touches every week, but he has serious concerns heading into Week 17 with the Broncos benching Russell Wilson and starting journeyman backup Jarrett Stidham at QB. The Broncos are at risk for total offensive collapse with Stidham under center and the franchise appears to be shifting its focus to the offseason already. Williams gets into the flex discussion simply based on volume, but he has an exceedingly low floor in what projects to be a gross offensive environment rest of season.

DEN RB Javonte Williams - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. New England Patriots
Javonte Williams had his worst fantasy day of the season in Week 15 when he only played 52% of the Broncos' offensive snaps and managed just 20 total yards on 12 carries and two targets. Williams had operated as the clear lead back in Denver for three weeks heading into the matchup with Detroit, but it is hard to tell if that will stick in all game scripts with Sean Payton taking more of a committee approach last week. A noticeable trend the last two games is an increase in passing game work for backup Samaje Perine and a drop in route participation for Williams. This development lowers Williams' ceiling but he should maintain a solid floor this week against a Patriots team that struggles to keep up with everyone on the scoreboard. Williams is playable as a flex or low-end RB2 for the fantasy playoffs.

DEN RB Javonte Williams - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 @ Detroit Lions
Javonte Williams logged a finish as Week 14's RB11 by compiling 91 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and four targets. Williams remains the unquestioned lead back for the Broncos and has consistently been receiving at least 15 weekly opportunities since returning from injury in Week 7. Aside from an ugly game in Week 11, Williams has managed at least 70 total yards in every game during that span and scored three touchdowns along the way. Now Williams and the Broncos travel to Detroit to take on a Lions defense that has been trending downward in recent weeks. The Broncos should be able to move the ball this week and Williams will be one of the primary beneficiaries from a fantasy standpoint. He slots in as a quality RB2 option this week.

DEN RB Javonte Williams - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Los Angeles Chargers
Javonte Williams again led the Denver backfield in Week 13 with 16 opportunities (13 carries plus three targets), but only managed 70 scoreless yards from scrimmage on that workload. Williams is seeing robust usage as Denver's clear lead back, but the Broncos' offense is not producing much in terms of scoring opportunities for him as he only has two touchdowns on the season and none since Week 10. Williams is regularly seeing 15+ touches per game since returning from injury and that locks him into RB2 consideration, but his ceiling is capping by the involvement of Samaje Perine in the passing game and the Broncos' intermittent offensive struggles. The Chargers are not an imposing matchup for any offense, meaning Williams is a solid starting option this week.
