BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New York Jets

J.K. Dobbins missed all of last season with a knee injury and is questionable to start the year. If he’s active, it’s hard not to start him, given the matchup. The Jets ranked dead last in aFPA to opposing running backs last season and this could be a blowout victory for the Ravens. Watch the injury report carefully, and be prepared to shift to Mike Davis if Dobbins is out, but with Gus Edwards hurt for at least the first four weeks of the season, it’s Dobbins’ job if he’s healthy.

Update: Dobbins is out, so we'll have to at least wait one more week to see his return.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
J.K. Dobbins had a lost sophomore season after tearing his ACL during the preseason. On the bright side, the early injury gives him extra time to recover. If he’s ready to go, he’s in prime position to walk into RB2 numbers in this offense. He had 805 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie in 2020 and the Ravens’ offensive attack is predicated on the run game under offensive coordinator Greg Roman. The Ravens were third in the NFL in rushing attempts last season, and were number one in the league in each of the three years prior. Much of that is Lamar Jackson’s unprecedented rushing from the quarterback position, but it also speaks to the general philosophy of the offense. Even Devonta Freeman and Latavius Murray combined for 252 carries last season. If Dobbins is healthy, the workload should be there.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Coming off a torn ACL, there’s always concern, especially for a player with a limited resume to begin with. Additionally, Dobbins also injured his LCL, so it may take a little longer for him to get back to full speed. If he’s not ready to go, the Ravens still have fellow ACL victim Gus Edwards in the mix, so the team won’t need to rush Dobbins back to 100% work. There’s also always the chance for limited red zone attempts with Jackson’s scrambling ability, though his nine touchdowns as a rookie are nothing to scoff at.

2022 Bottom Line
The risks associated with Dobbins are baked into his fifth-round ADP, making him a worthy gamble in the running back dead zone if you’re trying to stockpile lottery picks at that point in the draft. There’s a world where Dobbins is a steady RB2 and fringe-RB1 fantasy option this year, but coming off the injury it’s okay to hedge a bit. Coming off the board as the RB21 is a nice blend of risk-reward for the former Buckeye. Boom-or-bust option, so be sure to account for him as a volatile part of your lineup, and just hope you get lucky.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

J.K. Dobbins was productive as a rookie, playing infinitely better than Mark Ingram, and effectively pushing him out of town with a 6.0 yards-per-attempt average on 134 rushes. He also scored nine touchdowns, quite a feat when featured in the same offense as Lamar Jackson. Dobbins’ role increased over the course of the season, as he had double-digit carries in eight of his final nine active games. If that workload continues, he’ll be a lock for RB2 production, especially if he continues to score at a similar clip. Seven of his nine touchdowns were in his final six games.

Fantasy Downside

Those touchdowns seem bound for regression, and Lamar Jackson is going to continue to get red zone work on the ground as well. Plus, Dobbins will still split carries with Gus Edwards, even if the sophomore is likely to get the bulk of the touches. The biggest downside with Dobbins is his lack of impact in the passing game. Even for a team that throws as little as the Ravens do, Dobbins’ 24 targets last season – just two in his final five games – is heavily concerning. If that trend continues, it severely limits his upside outside of standard league formats.

2021 Bottom Line

Dobbins in the middle of the third round at ADP is assuming he gets the bulk of the touches in Baltimore, but it might be a bit too rich when you consider the touchdowns he’s likely to lose and his curiously absent impact in the passing game as a rookie. Gus Edwards will continue to steal touches as well. Dobbins should be considered a solid RB2 option for fantasy rosters, which is right where we have him ranked. If his ADP drops a round or two, he becomes more interesting as a safe RB2 target, but in the third round, there should be better options available.

Update:
Dobbins tore his ACL and will miss the season. Bump up Gus Edwards across all rankings into RB2 territory.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Cincinnati Bengals

J.K. Dobbins has only one game over 100 yards this year, but he has a nose for the end zone, with seven on the season and one in each of his past five games. Dobbins had 77 yards and a score on just 11 carries against the Giants last week, and he seems to be getting starter touches over the second half of the season.

This week, Dobbins faces a Bengals defense that ranks 18th in aFPA to opposing running backs, and just gave up big numbers to David Johnson last week. Expect the Ravens to continue to lean on their ground-based attack and for Dobbins to benefit from a nice matchup and double-digit carries. The presence of Gus Edwards and Lamar Jackson stealing rushing touchdowns downgrades Dobbins’ value a little, but he should still be considered a quality RB2 option in most leagues.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. New York Giants

J.K. Dobbins had 14 carries and a reception last week for a total of 81 yards and a touchdown, as the Ravens dispatched the Jaguars with ease. Dobbins has double-digit touches in six of his last seven games, and he seems to have a stranglehold on the starting job. With Mark Ingram fading into the background, and Gus Edwards a quality complementary player, Dobbins should be a decent RB2 option for the final two games.

The Giants rank 15th in aFPA to opposing running backs. We have Dobbins ranked as a fringe-RB1 this week. That makes sense, thinking the Ravens will get up early once again and run the ball in positive game script. Start him.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

J.K. Dobbins had a decent game against the Browns last week, rushing 13 times for 53 yards and a touchdown. However, he still wasn’t active in the passing game and was spelled regularly by Gus Edwards – who scored a pair of touchdowns as well. Dobbins seems to be the lead back, but it looks like Edwards isn’t going away.

This week, Dobbins faces a Jaguars defense that ranks 29th in aFPA to opposing running backs. It’s a great matchup and if Dobbins sees double-digit touches for the fourth straight contest, he should be a quality RB2 option in all league formats. Start him.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Cleveland Browns

J.K. Dobbins had 11 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown on Tuesday night against the Cowboys. It was a little concerning that Gus Edwards and Mark Ingram combined for 13 carries, and that Dobbins failed to record a target, but overall, it was a nice day of work for the rookie, who has become more and more active in the offense in recent games.

This week, Dobbins faces a Browns defense that ranks 17th in aFPA to opposing running backs but just held Derrick Henry to 60 yards on 15 carries – no small feat. The additional touches make Dobbins a solid RB2 option in all league formats, however, especially after finding the end zone last week. Start him.
