Fantasy Upside
HC Bruce Arians said at the Scouting Combine back in February that he wanted a tight end who can block. He got one this offseason, when the Cardinals agreed to a two-year deal with John Carlson. The veteran, who turned 30 in May, has hauled in 177 passes for 1,906 yards and 14 TDs in six NFL seasons. Before joining Minnesota in 2012, Carlson had a four-season stint in Seattle (2008-2011).
Fantasy Downside
Carlson was cut by the Vikings earlier this offseason, going down as one of the early busts of free agency in recent years. For the five-year, $25 million contract they Vikings gave him two years ago, he caught just 40 passes. Carlson also had at least three concussions during that span and considered retiring because of them.
Bottom Line
Despite the negatives, there's a major positive here: Carlson appears to be on top of the depth chart at tight end. According to ESPN.com, Carlson has been making catches all camp. The question for fantasy owners is whether he'll be a blocker first and receiver second. We suspect the former.
