Seahawks work out RBs; expect Thomas Rawls to play

While Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Monday he expects Thomas Rawls will be able to play Sunday against the 49ers, the team appears to be looking at other tailback options just in case — either for this week or the playoffs.

The NFL’s official transaction wire confirmed that the Seahawks on Tuesday worked out five running backs, four of whom have some significant NFL experience — Stevan Ridley, Jonas Gray, LaMichael James, Dominique Williams and Daniel Herron.

There was also a report (which has yet to be confirmed by the transaction wire or the team) that the Seahawks have re-signed running back Kelvin Taylor to the practice squad. Taylor, a sixth-round pick of the 49ers this year, was on Seattle’s active roster for the win over the Rams, then released the following week. He is the son of former NFL star Fred Taylor, and like his father played at Florida.

Fantasy Impact: 

Rawls suffered a bruised shoulder in the first half of Saturday’s 34-31 win over Arizona and did not play in the second half. HC Pete Carroll expects Rawls to be OK.

Jags eyeing up their RB3 options

Jags RB Denard Robinson has outlasted all the changes at running back over the last few years, but he is still facing competition.

After injured tailback Jonas Gray was waived last week, the trio of Robinson, Corey Grant and Joe Banyard are entrenched in one of the most interesting preseason storylines as each battles for a limited number of roster spots behind starters T.J. Yeldon and Chris Ivory.

The Jaguars won’t carry a fullback on their 53-man roster, which could create room for a fourth or fifth tailback when the roster is trimmed.

Fantasy Impact: 

Robinson, Grant and Banyard could be vying for two roster spots — or if each makes the roster, are jockeying for playing time. They appeared in the Tampa Bay preseason game in that order. Yeldon and Ivory are supposed to split time, so the team's RB3 could have fantasy value should Ivory or Yeldon get injured, something that happened to both last season.

Last December, the Jaguars signed Jonas Gray when starter T.J. Yeldon sustained a knee injury that kept him out of the final three games.

Gray was given an opportunity in the team’s final two games and said he “feels good about” what he was able to do: 14 carries for 54 yards while showing a nice burst against New Orleans and Houston.

Getting another chance like that in Jacksonville this season could be difficult.

Yeldon and Chris Ivory, who led the AFC in rushing with the Jets last season and signed a free agent deal with the Jaguars, will share a majority of the carries as long as they remain healthy.

That leaves Gray in competition with Denard Robinson and Corey Grant for a job as the team’s No. 3 tailback.

Fantasy Impact: 

Robinson has struggled to prove he can withstand a heavy workload. Grant was placed on injured reserve in October with a hip injury. He had just two carries last season, but might also be the team’s best kick returner. But, Gray has struggled to stay on the radar since a huge game against Indy with the Pats. He was then late for a meeting and eventually lost his roster spot.

Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon (knee, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 17. According to beat writer Michael DiRocco, Jaguars OC Greg Olson said that “the plan is to get a good look at RB Jonas Gray” in Sunday’s finale. Denard Robinson has only gained 48 rushing yards on 20 carries in favorable matchups over the last two weeks, so it’s not surprising that the team wants to evaluate Gray, who had success while playing for the Patriots.
