Scouting report

PHI WR Jordan Matthews - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. New Orleans

Jordan Matthews had three catches for 50 yards last week, and was targeted eight times. Matthews continues to not be able to hold on to the ball at times this season, especially after a key drop against the Falcons in Week 1 that came late in the game.

This week, the Eagles get the Saints at home who have been a little weaker against the pass. New Orleans is 14th in allowing fantasy points to WRs, so it's a pretty decent matchup and Matthews is ranked as a high-end WR2 option. Sam Bradford showed some ability to throw the deep ball last week, so perhaps there's reason to be encouraged if you're a Matthews owner.

PHI WR Jordan Matthews - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Washington
Jordan Mathews had six catches for 49 yards last week and was targeted eight times. It was just an OK performance from Matthews as the passing game struggled once again for Philly. Matthews is ranked as a WR2 option again this week going against the Skins defense, which is 18th in allowing fantasy points to WRs. It's a pretty safe matchup, and Matthews makes for a decent low-end WR2 option even with the Eagles offense struggling.

PHI WR Jordan Matthews - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Detroit
In the Week 2 box score, it looked like Jordan Matthews had a pretty good game in, catching six passes for 80 yards and his first TD of the season. However, a lot of that production came late in the game with things pretty much wrapped up. Following a key Week 1 drop, Matthews dropped two more catchable balls that halted drives in last week's game. Since overall numbers matter the most, Matthews owners should still be in good shape even in a tough matchup against the Jets in Week 2. NYJ is ranked second in allowing fantasy points to WRs and stuffed the Colts offense last week, holding them to just seven points. Matthews plays in the slot and should be able to avoid Darrelle Revis, so he's ranked as a low-end WR1 despite the matchup.

PHI WR Jordan Matthews - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Dallas

Jordan Matthews caught 10 balls for 102 yards on 13 targets in Week 1. He was really the only WR utilized as QB Sam Bradford threw most of his passes to TEs and RBs.

Matthews is already proving to be worth the early pick owners spent on him. He's clearly the team's WR1 right now with rookie Nelson Agholor struggling a bit in Week 1. It's a tough matchup this week against the Cowboys (who are fifth in allowing fantasy points to QBs), but Matthews plays out of the slot quite a bit, which is a nice advantage for him. Despite the tough matchup on paper, Matthews is ranked sixth on our WR list this week and is shaping up to be a solid, every week play.

PHI WR Jordan Matthews - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Atlanta
In just his second year, Jordan Matthews is already the Eagles top receiving option. He's already formed a good connection with QB Sam Bradford which should go a long way towards fantasy success in 2015. Matthews comes in ranked 10th on our WR list this week, making him a WR1 play right out of the gate. Matthews will play mostly out of the slot again this year and will create some mismatches the Eagles are hoping to take advantage of. The Falcons were 22nd in allowing fantasy points to WRs last season, so Matthews should be in store for a solid game on Monday night.

PHI WR Jordan Matthews - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
In his rookie season, Jordan Matthews ended up with a 67-872-8 line last year. Many of the yards and TDs came from about the mid-point of the season on, and he seemed to excel after Nick Foles went down with an injury and Mark Sanchez took over. With Jeremy Maclin out of the picture, one can argue Matthews is the team’s most talented WR heading into the season. With a full year under his belt and a chance for more playing time, Matthews should be able to put up a lot of fantasy points in Chip Kelly’s high-paced offense.

Fantasy Downside
Matthews' success is going to get him a lot of attention from defenses. With Nelson Agholor just a rookie and Riley Cooper not much of a threat, Matthews is the guy opponents will likely watch, at least early on this season. Matthews worked well with Sanchez but the Birds hope to have a new signal caller in Sam Bradford, and right now it’s unclear how well these guys will click.

Bottom Line
Matthews is ranked 19th among our WRs heading into camps. While he displayed flashes of talent last year and should improve this season, you may find some guys below him on our list - like Julian Edelman, Golden Tate and Andre Johnson - a little safer options as more established players when going to fill your WR2 slot.

PHI WR Jordan Matthews - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 - Matthews vs. NY Giants
Jordan Matthews had three catches for 58 yards. It was an improvement over his shutout the previous week and more on par with what we've seen from him most of this season. Back in Week 6 against the Giants, Matthews had four catches for 50 yards. Mathews has the potential to put up a big game but he's been relatively quiet over the last three weeks.
