Jets GM: QB Sam Darnold is 'unflappable'

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan offered his take Monday on the team's quarterback competition, gushing about rookie Sam Darnold and all but confirming he's open to trading Teddy Bridgewater.

Maccagnan, in an interview with New York radio station WFAN, said he's "exceptionally impressed" with Darnold, describing the former USC star as "unflappable."

Fantasy Impact: 

These were the GM's first public comments on the three-way quarterback battle involving Darnold, Bridgewater and McCown, the story said. It's been speculated Jets higher-ups want to roll with Darnold while HC Todd Bowles may have been leaning toward one of the veteran QBs to win games and potentially save his job. Maccagnan pretty much confirmed in the story the team is open to trading one of the veteran QBs. It sure seems like Darnold is going to open the season as the Jets' starting QB.

Cimini said it seems obvious Darnold will start this week's preseason game based on all of his reps. He thinks the only way things change is if Darnold regresses against the Giants.

The Jets have already called their starting quarterback job a “tough decision,” but coach Todd Bowles denied that a decision for the week has already been made after rookie quarterback Sam Darnold got more work with the starting offense in practice Sunday.

According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, Darnold got his most extensive work with the starters of the offseason, taking more reps with the ones than either Josh McCown or Teddy Bridgewater.

Fantasy Impact: 

Darnold was also the first quarterback out during what was supposed to be a live scrimmage period, the story said, before rain cut the practice short. Bowles did say all of that was "no indication" of a decision.

Schefter: Jets QB Sam Darnold has 'very fair shot' to win starting job

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Darnold has a “very fair shot” at nailing down the starting job before the start of the regular season as he is “further along than they thought” he’d be at this point. HC Todd Bowles has installed Josh McCown as the team’s No. 1 with Teddy Bridgewater running as the No. 2 in training camp.

Fantasy Impact: 

Keep an eye on Darnold in Thursday's preseason game as he gets a chance to go against the Falcons defense. It's been reported Bowles may prefer to start a veteran to try and win games to keep his job while ownership may be leaning to throwing Darnold in the fire immediately.
