Fantasy Upside
Josh McCown showed a lot of promise last season when he filled in for Jay Cutler after injury. McCown started five games (played in eight) and threw 13 touchdowns while only having one interception. In McCown’s five starts he averaged over 300 passing yards per game.
Part of McCown’s success in Chicago came from a strong supporting cast. He had tall, talented receivers like Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. Well, he has a similar cast in Tampa with Vincent Jackson and rookie Mike Evans.
Fantasy Downside
Even though McCown showed promise last season, people should realize he’s a 35-year-old QB playing in his 12th season. He’s been a career backup who, before joining Marc Trestman’s system, had a career TD-INT ratio of 37-44.
McCown’s success came in a very small, five game sample. There’s no telling if this veteran will be able to produce like he did last season in a new system.
Bottom Line
There’s potential here, but the Bucs’ QB is nowhere near being a QB1. He’ll likely be able to give you some good games here and there based on matchups, but overall it’s better to avoid McCown on draft day. He’ll best be served as a bye-week filler or a backup.
