TB QB Josh McCown - Week 10, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Josh McCown - Week 10 vs. Atlanta

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going back to Josh McCown. The switch means McCown can hope to improve on his team-leading two rushing touchdowns. Yes, the quarterback who hasn't played since Week 3 is leading the Bucs in rushing touchdowns.

Before his injury McCown was struggling as a starter. He never threw for over 200 yards and he has a 2-4 TD-INT ratio.

McCown at least has some decent targets to throw to in Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans. He also gets a favorable matchup against Atlanta this week. Still, McCown has a very low floor and is one of the poorer options at QB this week.

TB QB Josh McCown - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Josh McCown - Week 3 vs. Atlanta

In his first two games this season Josh McCown has failed to throw for 200 yards and he's thrown at least one interception. In Week 2 against St. Louis he managed to run in two touchdowns while passing for none. It's highly unlikely McCown will ever have two rushing touchdowns in a game again.

This week he faces a Falcons defense that allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to QBs a year ago. In the first two games this season the Falcons have been favorable to QBs. Atlanta gave up 333 yards to Drew Brees in Week 1 and 252 yards to Andy Dalton in Week 2 (on just 23 pass attempts).

It's difficult to trust McCown considering his poor numbers so far this season. The rushing touchdowns in Week 2 should be seen as a fluke. To be fair to him, he has seen some tough pass defenses in the first two weeks. An easier opponent in Week 3 means he could pass the 200-yard passing mark for the first time this season. The Bucs will also likely be trailing in this game, meaning more pass attempts for McCown.

For now, it'd be best to leave McCown sidelined. He hasn't shown enough this season to warrant a start.

TB QB Josh McCown - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Josh McCown - Week 2 vs. St. Louis

Josh McCown struggled in his season debut against a stingy Carolina Panthers defense. He completed 22 of his 35 pass attempts for just 183 yards. He did manage to throw two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter. McCown had two of three of his offensive starters leave early due to an injury (Logan Mankins, Doug Martin, Austin Seferian-Jenkins).

This week McCown faces a St. Louis defense that only gave up 170 yards to Matt Cassel in Week 1. To be fair, Minnesota didn't throw the ball often enough to test the Rams' secondary.

McCown is a poor option at quarterback this league and should be placed on the bench.

TB QB Josh McCown - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Josh McCown - Week 1 vs. Carolina

Josh McCown was very impressive as a fill-in for Chicago last season. He threw 13 touchdowns and only had one interception. It was unprecedented for the veteran journeyman and he isn't expected to be nearly that effective for Tampa Bay this season.

McCown isn't a horrible option, but he's not the type of player you'll be starting on a weekly basis. At best he'll be a streaming QB option if he's given a good matchup. This week, he has one of the toughest matchups he'll face all season.

Carolina was the second toughest defense against fantasy QBs last season (only Seattle was tougher). When you combine that with McCown's abilities you get a horrible fantasy option for Week 1. Look elsewhere.

Fantasy Upside

Josh McCown showed a lot of promise last season when he filled in for Jay Cutler after injury. McCown started five games (played in eight) and threw 13 touchdowns while only having one interception. In McCown’s five starts he averaged over 300 passing yards per game.

Part of McCown’s success in Chicago came from a strong supporting cast. He had tall, talented receivers like Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. Well, he has a similar cast in Tampa with Vincent Jackson and rookie Mike Evans.

Fantasy Downside

Even though McCown showed promise last season, people should realize he’s a 35-year-old QB playing in his 12th season. He’s been a career backup who, before joining Marc Trestman’s system, had a career TD-INT ratio of 37-44.

McCown’s success came in a very small, five game sample. There’s no telling if this veteran will be able to produce like he did last season in a new system.

Bottom Line

There’s potential here, but the Bucs’ QB is nowhere near being a QB1. He’ll likely be able to give you some good games here and there based on matchups, but overall it’s better to avoid McCown on draft day. He’ll best be served as a bye-week filler or a backup.
