Scouting report

LAC WR Joshua Palmer - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Dallas Cowboys

After four games of the 2023 season, Josh Palmer has amassed 11 receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown. He set a season-high with 77 yards in Week 4, but he is averaging a mere 6.4 Half-PPR points per game.

Wide receivers have not enjoyed much success against the Cowboys in 2023, with Dan Quinn's charges ranking 9th in aFPA to the position. Palmer should be viewed as no more than a WR4/Flex option in Week 6.

LAC WR Josh Palmer - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Josh Palmer had his most productive game of the season in Week 3 against the Vikings, Palmer played 61% of the Chargers' offensive snaps and earned seven targets. He corralled four for 66 yards and a touchdown, giving him 12.6 Half PPR points and a WR27 finish for the week.

The Raiders have been better against wide receivers than other positions so far this season, and rank 11th in aFPA to wideouts. Palmer has generally benefited from a higher workload when Mike Williams has missed time over the last few seasons, earning 15.8% of the targets with Williams out of the lineup compared to 10.9% when the former Clemson Tiger plays. Still, it's hard to get too excited about Palmer from a fantasy point of view, given his finishing as a WR3 or worse in 79% of his games over the last two seasons. He's a desperation WR4 option this week.

LAC WR Josh Palmer - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Indianapolis Colts

Josh Palmer played on just 65% of the Chargers' snaps in Week 15 against the Titans. He saw five targets and caught all five for 49 yards. This was his first game under 50 receiving yards since Week 10. Palmer finished with 7.4 Half PPR points, good for WR46 in Week 15.

Palmer and the Chargers have an unimposing clash against the middling Colts' defense this week. The Colts rank 17th in aFPA to wide receivers this season, despite only allowing the fifth-fewest receiving yards to wideouts this year. But with his role shrinking since the Chargers' other receivers returned, Palmer is viewed as a high-end WR4 at best this week.

LAC WR Josh Palmer - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Tennessee Titans

With both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams available, Josh Palmer saw his role diminish on the Chargers' offense. He played 79% of the snaps, his lowest share since Week 5, and drew just six targets. The last time he had such a low number of looks was also back in Week 5. Palmer caught four passes for 53 yards, his fourth game in a row with at least 50 yards but third in a row with no more than 60. Palmer scored 7.3 Half PPR points, good for a WR43 finish last week.

The Titans rank 31st in aFPA to wide receivers, allowing the third-most receptions and receiving yards along with the second-most touchdowns along the way. But with Allen and Williams eating as much of the pie as they are, it's hard to get too excited about Palmer. He's a barely usable WR4 this week.

LAC WR Josh Palmer - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs Miami Dolphins

For the fourth time in his last six games, Josh Palmer saw double-digit targets in Week 13. He pulled in seven of his 11 looks but could only muster 60 scoreless yards on his way to 9.5 Half PPR points, good for WR32 for the week. Palmer has averaged a 93.45 snap share, a 24.1% target share and a 37.1% air yard share since Week 9. But he has averaged just 12.9 Half PPR points in this span.

He faces a tricky matchup against the Dolphins in Week 14. Miami ranks 13th in aFPA to wide receivers and has allowed just eight wide receiver touchdowns all season. Still, given his opportunity share of late, we should still expect him to finish as a WR3 this week.

LAC WR Josh Palmer - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Las Vegas Raiders

Josh Palmer was OK in Week 12, without really being spectacular. He saw seven targets, his fewest in a game since Week 5, and while he reeled in five of them he only posted 56 yards without scoring a touchdown. Palmer managed just 8.1 Half PPR points on his way to WR47 numbers.

With Mike Williams still on the shelf, Palmer could be in for a decent day against the Raiders in Week 13. The Raiders rank 22nd in aFPA to wide receivers this season, which combined with Palmer's recent role and usage keeps him in the WR3 conversation this week.

LAC WR Josh Palmer - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Arizona Cardinals

It was quite a day for Josh Palmer against the Chiefs in Week 11. Palmer caught eight of his 10 targets for 106 yards, tying a season-high, while also scoring two touchdowns. He racked up 26.6 Half PPR points on his way to the overall WR3 for the week.

Palmer will look to keep the good times rolling in Week 12, but it won't be easy for him. The Cardinals rank sixth in aFPA to wide receivers this season, despite sitting ninth in receptions allowed to wideouts in 2022. But Palmer has ten or more targets in three of his last four games, and with Mike Williams set to miss out he should be viewed as a high-end WR3 this week.
