LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Carolina Panthers

What we saw last week against the Raiders is, sadly, about what we should come to expect from Justin Herbert in this Jim Harbaugh/Greg Roman. He'll be pretty efficient, spread the ball around, and won't have a ton of attempts, even when trailing into the middle of the third quarter.

Herbert gets the Panthers this week who let Derek Carr throw for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns in basically a half before turning into a run-heavy offense in the second half. That sounds about right for Herbert, but probably doesn't sound great for your fantasy team. Herbert is a back-end QB2 this week and should only be started in Superflex leagues.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Justin Herbert has been a full participant in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday leaving behind any worries that the signal caller would be limited due to his plantar fasciitis injury suffered earlier in the summer.

We'll get our first look at Hebert in this new Jim Harbaugh/Greg Roman offense against an improved Raiders defense. We'll also get a chance to see what the run/pass splits are and just what type of season we're in for with this cast of receivers around him. Can the efficiency offset the lower pass volume, we'll have to see. Projections have Herbert at QB20 on the week. He's a QB2, who likely won't be counted on outside of superflex.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
It's tough to look at the new coaching staff in Los Angeles and feel great about Justin Herbert, but it's possible the efficiency of the offense is enough to carry him to a fantasy-viable season. As John Paulsen pointed out, he's finished the last two seasons as a QB which is about his ceiling now. When healthy, he's a top-5 talent at quarterback so the only question is if Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman keep the Ferrari in the garage or let him loose.

Fantasy Downside
As great as it is to hope for better efficiency, Herbert is unfortunately in what could be the run-heaviest offense in the league. Harbaugh and Roman are going to run the football and then run it some more. Herbert also lost his top four options in the passing game as all of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Austin Ekeler, and Gerald Everett have moved on. Josh Palmer has proven capable, but the same cannot be said for Quentin Johnston or DJ Chark. A lot will be riding on the shoulders of rookie WR Ladd McConkey out of Georgia this season. Losing most of the training camp to a plantar fascia injury isn't ideal either and while the expectation is he'll be ready for Week 1, we'll have to wait and see.

2024 Bottom Line
While Herbert will be in a boot for a few weeks with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot, he should be ready for Week 1. With that in mind, Herbert is in a run-heavy offense without many premier options to run the ball. Will a strong offensive line and scheme keep the Chargers on schedule? Or will Herbert and his underwhelming weapons have to carry more of the load than we are expecting? On Underdog, Herbert is coming off the board 136th overall at QB17, which seems fine for best ball. In redraft leagues, he will be going higher than that and that is where fading him is probably a better option.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Denver Broncos

In a game that was an insult to fantasy football, Justin Herbert managed a mere 8.0 fantasy points against the Patriots in Week 13. Herbert amassed 212 scoreless yards on 37 attempts as he finished as the QB22 for the week.

Herbert, and his fantasy managers, will be looking for a bounceback performance this week against the Broncos. Denver ranks eighth in aFPA to quarterbacks this season, but the Chargers' ground game is giving them next to nothing at present, ranking eighth last in rushing yards this season. So putting the game on Herbert's arm might be the way to go, making Herbert projectable as a low-end QB1.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at New England Patriots

Week 12 was a difficult week for Justin Herbert in both reality and fantasy football, as the Chargers went down to defeat against the Ravens. Herbert could only muster 217 yards and a single touchdown from 44 pass attempts, giving him 13.4 fantasy points and a QB16 finish for the week. In average points per game, Herbert is the QB4 with 20.4.

Herbert faces a tough matchup in Week 13 against a Patriots team that can't do anything on offense but ranks seventh in aFPA to quarterbacks in 2023. Herbert is probably a mid-tier QB1 this week, especially with other teams on a bye.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs Baltimore Ravens

Truth be told, Justin Herbert did enough to earn a win against the Packers in Week 11. He passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns, adding another 73 yards with his legs on his way to 25.7 fantasy points, finishing as the QB3. His numbers would have been even better had his pass catchers not engaged in a series of heartbreaking drops.

Herbert cannot afford to see his surrounding talent fail again, with a clash against the Ravens coming up in Week 12. The Ravens rank sixth in aFPA to quarterbacks this season. Herbert should continue to take to the sky often enough to remain fantasy-relevant, despite the tough matchup, although he's closer to being a QB2 than he is to being THE QB1 this week.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Green Bay Packers

Justin Herbert broke out of his fantasy fun last week, scoring 28.4 fantasy points on his way to the QB2 in Week 10. Herbert had struggled recently, but he still ranks QB3 in average fantasy points per game with 20.5.

Herbert, and Herbert's fantasy managers, will be hoping for another carnival performance from him against the Packers in Week 11. But gamescript might favor an alternative approach from the Chargers, given the Packers ranking eighth in aFPA to quarterbacks but 25th to running backs. Even so, with so many bad quarterbacks currently clogging up NFL starting gigs, Herbert should be viewed as a QB1, albeit a mid-tier one, in Week 11.
