2022 Fantasy Upside
The Steelers are hoping Kenny Pickett is the heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger sooner rather than later. They have publicly stated the No. 1 pick from Pitt will get a shot at the starting job in training camp. Pickett was the only quarterback drafted in the first round in the 2022 draft. During his senior season for the Panthers he successfully showcased his strong arm and his mobility and strength in the pocket. The Steelers have good offensive weapons that will help whoever wins the starting job.
2022 Fantasy Downside
Pickett is a rookie and you never know which ones will be long-term quarterbacks in the league or busts. And we might not find out about him right away if he doesn't beat out veteran Mitch Trubisky to start Week 1. There are some obstacles for Pickett as he will play behind a much-maligned offensive line that really affected a Steelers offense that had problems keeping a less mobile Roethlisberger upright. Pickett also did panic in the pocket at times in college, but was able to make plays against less speed, something that won't be easy in the NFL.
2022 Bottom Line
This will depend on when your draft is or if you have a dynasty/keeper league. The starting QB probably won't be named until later in training camp but if is Pickett, he will be a great second QB on your roster, especially in those keeper leagues. We are leaning towards Pittsburgh going with Trubisky early in the season, but don't be surprised if Pickett still gets the majority of starts in 2022.
