CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at New England Patriots

Khalil Herbert had a huge 63-yard run last week, but that's about all he did. Outside of that carry, he ran six times for 11 yards and saw no targets. Herbert's seven carries are nice, especially considering he only played 16 offensive snaps. The Bears will likely continue to give Herbert some touches, but maybe not enough to make him a viable fantasy option. He's especially risky this week against the Patriots, who have allowed the third-fewest average fantasy points to running backs this season. Herbert is nothing more than a desperation flex play in Week 7.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Washington Commanders

Khalil Herbert returned to backup duties in Week 5 as David Montgomery returned from injury. Herbert played on just 14 snaps (28%) and saw four carries with no targets. Despite his success as a lead back with Montgomery out, the Bears simply don't utilize Herbert when both backs are healthy. Herbert will go back to being a bench stash in Week 6 against the Commanders.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Minnesota Vikings

Khalil Herbert looked good last week as David Montgomery sat out with an injury. Herbert ran 19 times for 77 yards and caught his lone target for 24 yards. He also played on 77% of the offensive snaps, so as expected he'll be the clear No. 1 back as long as Montgomery rests. He gets a decent matchup this week against the Vikings, and as long as Montgomery sits, Herbert remains a strong option at RB in fantasy. He's seen at least 20 touches in the last two games with Montgomery out, and he'll likely be around that number again in Week 5. Montgomery could be active this week, so his health will be worth monitoring, but as of now we'd expect another week of rest for him.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at New York Giants

David Montgomery left with an injury last week after playing just 11 snaps, opening the door for Khalil Herbert. Herbert took his opportunity and ran with it (quite literally), rushing 20 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 12 yards on two receptions. Herbert has proven in the past he's a talented back when he gets the bulk of the carries, but his Week 3 performance is a nice reminder. Assuming Montgomery is unable to go in Week 4, then Herbert becomes a must-play option at running back this week against the Giants. New York has given up the third-most rushing yards to running backs this year, and Herbert should get plenty of opportunities to run against that defense. Herbert should be viewed as a low-end RB1 play in Week 4.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Houston Texans

Khalil Herbert only played eight snaps last week, finishing with five touches. He busted out a long 27-yard run, but that was about it. This is clearly David Montgomery's backfield and it doesn't seem like Herbert will get enough touches to make him valuable in fantasy. For now, he should be viewed as a handcuff and not a viable starting option.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Green Bay Packers

Khalil Herbert saw 10 touches compared to David Montgomery's 20, but the second-year player was much more effective. Herbert had 5 ypc (45 rush yards) compared to Montgomery's 1.5, and he scored a touchdown. He saw a bit more playing time in this game compared to the final stretch of 2021. To compare, he played 29% of the offensive snaps this game vs. an average of 16.4% of the offensive snaps in the final nine games last season. Some of that could be attributed to how rainy it was. Still, it's clear this is Montgomery's offense for the time being. Herbert likely won't get enough touches to stay relevant most weeks. He's outside our top-50 RBs for the week.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. San Francisco 49ers
Khalil Herbert shined last season when David Montgomery was injured and not playing. But when Montgomery returned, Herbert was a non-factor. In the final nine games of the season, Herbert averaged just 2.4 carries per game with five total receptions. He could end up being used more in his second year, but we'll have to see it first. Herbert should be benched in Week 1.
