Scouting report

LAC WR Ladd McConkey - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs New Orleans Saints

It was a bit of a disappointing week for the Chargers offense as they couldn't get in the end zone, but Justin Herbert did set a season-high in passing yards and Ladd McConkey still saw 7 targets. While McConkey wasn't able to find the end zone, in PPR leagues he had a usable score last week.

The Saints are 14th aFPA against wide receivers so it's a middling matchup at best, but like every week, McConkey should lead the receivers in targets and in PPR leagues can scam his way there every week even if he doesn't find the end zone. He's a middle of the pack WR3 this week and should find his way in your lineup.

LAC WR Ladd McConkey - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Arizona Cardinals

Even in the most pass-happy of weeks from the Chargers, it was tough for Ladd McConkey to be anything more than a WR3/Flex option. He finished with 4 receptions for 43 yards. It's not bad, but it's also not what you were hoping for when you drafted him. He was limited in practice on Thursday, so it's important to keep an eye on his status throughout the weekend.

McConkey and the Chargers passing game have a solid matchup against the Cardinals (17th aFPA against wide receivers) and with a close spread and decent total for a Chargers game, it's not the worst place to start McConkey. He's a back-end WR3 this week, but the matchup is worth pursuing.

LAC WR Ladd McConkey - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Denver Broncos

We always look for a post-bye rookie bump, but I don't think this is the week it is coming for Ladd McConkey. Denver is 1st aFPA against wide receivers this season and even with Justin Herbert off the injury report, I'm not sure this is the spot to attack against the Broncos.

If you're considering using McConkey, it's best for a PPR format. He might be able to scam his way to a decent day, but it won't be efficient. McConkey is a back-end WR3 this week in a tough matchup and can be considered if you have no one better, but expectations should be lowered in a tough matchup.

LAC WR Ladd McConkey - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Pittsburgh Steelers

After being the leading receiver in Week 1, Ladd McConkey took a backseat to Quentin Johnston in Week 2. All in all, the story of the Chargers passing game is very low-scoring and whoever catches the touchdown (or two) that week will be the highest-scoring receiver. There's not enough volume here to sustain multiple receivers in a given week.

McConkey in a tough matchup is a flex if you're desperate and has slightly more appeal in PPR leagues, but again, the volume here isn't enough to sustain a usable week without a touchdown.

LAC WR Ladd McConkey - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Carolina Panthers

In a low-volume passing offense, it looks like Ladd McConkey might just be the WR1 in Los Angeles right away. He led the team in targets (7), catches (5), yards (39), and touchdowns (1). With Josh Palmer questionable this week, that could help McConkey even more.

The Panthers did a decent job limiting the New Orleans receivers last week, but they also didn't really push it in the second half with such a big lead. McConkey is a WR3 this week with more appeal in PPR formats.

LAC WR Ladd McConkey - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

While getting to join up with Justin Herbert would usually be a great thing for fantasy, the offense being coordinated by Greg Roman isn't great for Ladd McConkey and the receivers in Los Angeles.

McConkey will prove more useful on PPR leagues as he's expected to see more time in the slot. However, with the lower-volume passing attack he'll need to be super efficient after the catch or score a touchdown most weeks to outperform his early draft season ADP. This week, he checks in as a flex option in PPR leagues and a dart throw in standard leagues.

LAC WR Ladd McConkey - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Generally, second-round receivers who weren't overly productive in college are highly drafted in fantasy football as rookies. However, most don't have the absolute lack of competition that Ladd McConkey has in 2024. Outside of Josh Palmer, it's hard to see anyone competing with him for targets as Quentin Johnston continues to struggle and the only other standout in camp is seventh-round rookie Brendan Rice. McConkey should immediately start and be involved in 2WR sets off the bat. While it will be a low-volume passing attack, McConkey will have the benefit of playing with Justin Herbert.

Fantasy Downside
Again though, Day 2 wide receivers generally don't walk into fantasy success as rookies. And while there is almost no competition for targets outside of Josh Palmer, it isn't likely to get 120+ targets. Will he be efficient enough or get enough targets in the red zone to offset the lack of targets? We can't be sure yet.

2024 Bottom Line
For McConkey, it all comes down to how quickly he's in 2WR sets and how much, if any, of the other receivers are earning a significant target share. He's currently coming off the board as WR43 on Underdog (72nd overall) and this feels like a great buying opportunity given the lack of talent around him. Even if he starts slow, we're looking for him to come on strong in the fantasy playoffs. He'll make more sense in PPR leagues, but in redraft leagues he's currently going 15-30 spots later, offsetting some of the concerns in half-point PPR leagues.
