LA RB Lance Dunbar Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. San Francisco 49ers

The Rams will rest starters Jared Goff and Todd Gurley on Sunday so Sean Mannion and Malcolm Brown will start. Lance Dunbar will back-up Brown and will see some carries, although not enough to draw a start this week in fantasy. Ranked as our No. 36 RB for Week 17, avoid Dunbar in all formats.

LA RB Lance Dunbar - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

The Rams signed Lance Dunbar this offseason to fill a pass-catching role for new head coach Sean McVay. The Rams didn't bring back Benny Cunningham, and while Malcolm Brown is still in the mix as a backup to Todd Gurley, Dunbar is the team's No. 2 back when healthy.

Fantasy Downside

Unfortunately for Dunbar, he can never stay healthy. He's out indefinitely with a knee injury and has been battling knee problems for years. Even when healthy, he'll merely serve as Gurley's backup. Plus, with Gurley expected to draw more opportunities in the passing game, Dunbar's role in McVay's offense will be minimized.

2017 Bottom Line

Dunbar currently ranks as our RB79. There are better options if you're looking to fill your RB depth on draft night. Leave him off your board.

DAL RB Lance Dunbar - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Lance Dunbar was a big part of the Cowboys offense at the beginning of the season, especially in the passing game.

Fantasy Downside
However, a devastating knee injury knocked him out for the season and now he is trying to work his way back.

2016 Bottom Line
Even if he can come back, he is fourth on the depth chart behind a stud rookie and two veterans that have had success. His best chance to get on the field might be as third down back, but even that's a longshot at this point. Dunbar should not be on anyone's roster this season.

DAL RB Lance Dunbar - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at New Orleans
Lance Dunbar has become the PPR running back darling so far in 2015. He has had just two carries this season, but has 21 receptions for 215 yards. His value in standard leagues is low. He should not be in your lineup. But in a PPR league, he is a definitely a good play at an RB3 or flex position.

DAL RB Lance Dunbar - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Falcons
Lance Dunbar is getting on the field, but mostly in passing situations where he has been lining up in the slot. He has very little fantasy value except in a PPR league where he could put up some points as a receiver.

DAL RB Lance Dunbar - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Philadelphia
Lance Dubar had zero carries last week against New York. So, why are we talking about him? Because he did have 8 receptions, which gives him fantasy value in PPR leagues. In a standard league, he isn't even the second-best choice off the Dallas roster, but in PPR leagues, he could outscore starter Joseph Randle, especially with Dez Bryant now out.

DAL RB Lance Dunbar - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Lance Dunbar is the best receiver of all the running backs on the Cowboys. If he is going to get on the field, it will be on third downs after a career-high 14 catches last season.

Fantasy Downside
Dunbar is not really in the Cowboys plans as he could end up 4th on the depth chart. He has never carried the ball more than 30 times in the season and is not considered a back who could carry the ball 10-15 times a game.

Bottom Line
Dunbar has no fantasy value unless Cowboys running backs start getting hurt. Keep an eye on third downs and see if Dallas uses him. He could profice some value in PPR leagues, but there isn't enough production there to warrant a roster spot in standard fantasy leagues right now.
