Scouting report

LAR RB Malcolm Brown - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns
Malcolm Brown saw significant usage in Los Angeles' Week 1 victory, but while his snap share actually slightly increased in Week 2, his touch rate dipped from 52.4% in Week 1 to 28% in Week 2. His red-zone usage also decreased in favor of Todd Gurley, which led to an RB159 finish.

It's too early to say definitively what Brown's week-to-week usage will be, but he's trending toward a heavily touchdown-dependent play who has some extra value as Gurley's clear backup. This holds true in Week 3 against the Browns, as the projected game script doesn't support a run-heavy game plan, and Brown simply isn't a factor in the passing game. There are almost certainly higher-upside backs available to start as an RB3 in most leagues.

LAR RB Malcolm Brown - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New Orleans Saints
Malcolm Brown's teammate Darrell Henderson was far more popular in fantasy drafts this offseason, but in Week 1, Brown out-touched Henderson 11 to 1. Brown touched the ball on 52.4% of his snaps, the highest rate on the team, and he received every single running back touch for the Rams in the red zone. Brown was (or should have been) one of the top waiver-wire targets after Week 1.

Brown draws the New Orleans Saints defense in Week 2, and it's a matchup for fantasy owners to target, as the Saints allowed the third-most rushing yards win Week 1. This matchup is projected by Vegas bookmakers to be the highest-scoring game of the week, and if Brown is again the Ram's primary red-zone running back, he stands to have a high percentage of touchdown opportunities.

LAR RB Malcolm Brown - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Carolina Panthers

The Los Angeles Rams tendered Malcolm Brown as a 2nd-round RFA after the 2018 season, and when the Lions attempted to sign him to an offer sheet, the Rams elected to match and keep Brown around. He enters his fourth season with the team, and projects as the direct backup to Gurley in terms of early-down rushing work.

Brown faces the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, a defense that allowed the 12th-fewest rushing yards in 2018, in a game that Vegas projects to have one of the higher point totals of the week. That doesn't point to a heavy rushing volume overall for the Rams, and barring an injury to Gurley or a significant reduction in his snap share, he's not a recommended start for fantasy.

LA RB Malcolm Brown - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

The Rams re-signed Malcolm Brown, who was an exclusive rights free agent and who operated as Todd Gurley's primary backup in 2017. If Todd Gurley were to suffer an injury, Brown would be elevated to the Rams' No. 1 back. With the way Sean McVay uses his running back in both the passing and rushing game, Brown would have fantasy appeal.

Fantasy Downside

Brown was Gurley's backup a year ago and finished with just 246 rushing yards on 63 carries. Worse yet, he caught just 9 passes on 11 targets for 53 yards. If Gurley is healthy, Brown won't see the field much.

2018 Bottom Line

Brown is currently listed as our No. 69 ranked RB heading into preseason. Unless Gurley suffers an injury, there's no reason to roster Brown—even as a handcuff to Gurley. Avoid him on draft night.

LA RB Malcolm Brown Wild Card Round Fantasy Football Outlook

Wild Card Round vs. Atlanta Falcons

Malcolm Brown rushed 14 times for 54 yards while catching 4-of-5 targets for 7 yards in the Rams' Week 17 loss to the 49ers. Starting for Todd Gurley, Brown did his best running behind a makeshift offensive line. He will be relegated to backup duties again when the Rams host the Falcons on Saturday night. Ranked as our No. 16 RB for Wild Card weekend, avoid Brown in DFS or playoff formats.

LA RB Malcolm Brown Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. San Francisco 49ers

The Rams will rest starters Jared Goff and Todd Gurley on Sunday so Sean Mannion and Malcolm Brown will start. Brown ranks as our No. 27 RB for Week 17 and is an interesting FLEX play due to volume. If you’re a Gurley owner and play in your championship game this week, then Brown is a decent desperation play. He’s also an intriguing DFS option this week because he’s going to be dirt cheap. The Rams take on the 49ers, who rank 24th against fantasy running backs this season.

LA RB Malcolm Brown - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

With Lance Dunbar out indefinitely with a knee injury, Malcolm Brown is now the primary backup to Todd Gurley. Brown, who made the Rams a few years ago as an undrafted free agent, is now one Gurley injury away from being the starter.

Fantasy Downside

Brown rushed for just 39 yards on 18 carries last season, and even though he's entrenched as the No. 2 behind Gurley, that doesn't carry much fantasy weight. The Rams own one of the league's worst offensive lines and if Gurley were to get hurt they'd probably look for outside help at the running back position.

2017 Bottom Line

Brown ranks as our RB94 and can be avoided on draft day. Even if Gurley were to get injured, it's unlikely Brown would be the primary starter for the Rams, who should be dreadful offensively again in 2017.
