Drew Brees diagnosed with torn plantar fascia

A trying season for Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints has taken an ugly turn.

A team source told NFL Media's Albert Breer on Tuesday that the perennial Pro Bowl quarterback was diagnosed with a torn plantar fascia after undergoing an MRI on the right foot he injured in Monday night's loss to the Detroit Lions.

Brees' status for Sunday's road game against the Jaguars is unknown. If the 36-year-old passer can't suit up, backup Matt Flynn would take the controls for an offense that ranks third in the NFL.

Fantasy Impact: 

Even with the injury, Brees threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns against the Lions. In Denver, a partially torn plantar fascia has sidelined Peyton Manning since Week 10, meaning Brees is no sure bet to play again this season. Without Brees, the Saints offense takes a hit from a fantasy perspective.

The Saints are adding veteran quarterback Matt Flynn to their roster, per multiple reports Monday night.

Flynn spent time in training camp with the Patriots and Jets. He started four games for the Packers in 2013 and played in seven games last season. He’s also spent time with the Raiders and Seahawks.

Flynn, 30, was a seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2008.

Veteran backup Luke McCown had a season-ending back injury, which forced the Saints to add a quarterback.

The next game Tony Romo can start is Nov. 22 against the Miami Dolphins.

The Dallas Cowboys will place their starting quarterback on the injured reserve/designated to return list on Tuesday, according to a source, which will keep him out for the next eight weeks as he recovers from a broken left collarbone. Romo will not have surgery to repair the collarbone.

Romo will miss seven games because of the Cowboys' Oct. 18 bye week.

Brandon Weeden will be the starter in Romo's absence and the team is working out Christian Ponder, Josh Johnson, Matt Flynn and McLeod Bethel-Thompson but could also look to call up Kellen Moore from the practice squad.

Fantasy Impact: 

The move to short-term injured reserve opens up a roster spot for the Cowboys. Last year the Cowboys placed defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence on the list at the start of the season because of a foot injury and he missed the first eight games of his rookie season. Had the Cowboys placed wide receiver Dez Bryant, who is recovering from foot surgery, on the list, then they would have had to have kept Romo on the 53-man roster. A team can use the designation on only one player.

Todd Bowles provided clarity Monday on the ever-changing quarterback depth chart. Sort of.

Commenting for the first time since the New York Jets made their final cuts, releasing veteran quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson, Bowles revealed the reason they signed the two veterans was because starter Ryan Fitzpatrick "wasn't totally healthy."

Wait, what?

"Just being nicked up, just normal injuries," Bowles said. "You didn't want anything to happen to him, so you have to have a contingency plan and you bring in some other guys."

Fantasy Impact: 

Fitzpatrick's health bears watching because he broke his left leg last December while playing for the Houston Texans and had a steel rod surgically implanted into his lower leg. So if he's banged up after a couple of quarters of preseason work, spread out over two games, it's something to keep an eye on.
