Scouting report

DET QB Matthew Stafford - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

For the seventh straight season, Matthew Stafford not only didn’t miss a game, but he also threw for at least 4,200 yards. He remains the model of consistency, averaging 39 attempts per game and 28 TD tosses per season during the seven-year span. Even as the Lions tried to establish more of a balanced attack in 2017, Stafford still put the ball in the air 35 times for an average of 278 yards per contest. Only once last year did he pass for fewer than 200 yards.

Fantasy Downside

The running game continues to be non-productive for the Lions, which puts added pressure on Stafford. His 565 pass attempts last season were a career-low in seasons he played a full 16 games. He has thrown for more than 30 TDs just once in the past five years.

2018 Bottom Line

Stafford continues to be surrounded by weapons, including WRs Golden Tate, Marvin Jones, and Kenny Golladay, as well as RBs Theo Riddick and rookie Kerryon Johnson. Despite drafting Johnson in the second round and being focused on establishing a rushing attack, Detroit’s offense runs through Stafford’s arm. Since the Lions are rarely in the playoffs, their QB doesn’t get a lot of national attention, but he is one of the league’s best and you can pretty much count on him posting similar numbers to what he’s produced throughout his career.

DET QB Matthew Stafford - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Green Bay Packers

In the playoff-eliminating loss at Cincinnati last week, Matthew Stafford threw for 203 yards, with 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. While he has thrown for at least one score in eight consecutive contests, Stafford has been held to under 240 yards in two straight games. He torched the Packers secondary in early November, throwing for 361 yards and 2 TDs, and should be in line for another solid performance on Sunday in a meaningless game for both teams.

DET QB Matthew Stafford - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Cincinnati Bengals

In the Saturday win over the Bears, Matthew Stafford kept things going with another solid performance against a better-than-average defense. In the win, Stafford threw for 237 yards and 2 TDs. While he lost a fumble and the yardage was his lowest since Week 5, he remains a consistent play with multiple touchdown tosses in seven of the past 10 contests. This week at Cincinnati, he’ll be facing a beat up Bengals defense that didn’t show much life at Minnesota last Sunday. It’s obviously a critical time for your fantasy season and Stafford should remain your quarterback.

DET QB Matthew Stafford - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Chicago Bears

Playing with a sore throwing hand last week at Tampa, all Matthew Stafford did was throw for 381 yards—his second-highest total of the year—and 1 TD. He completed a season-high 36 passes on 44 attempts, the most times he’s put the ball in the air since the end of October. Stafford has thrown for at least one score in six straight. Chicago owns the ninth-best pass defense, allowing less than 220 yards per game through the air, but in November at Chicago, Stafford threw for just under 300 yards and 2 TDs. He should definitely be in your lineup this week.

DET QB Matthew Stafford - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Before leaving with an injured throwing hand last Sunday in the loss at Baltimore, Matthew Stafford threw for 292 yards and 1 TD. Detroit was behind for most of the game against a good defense, but the Lions were able to move the ball during soft coverage. While he hasn’t thrown for 300 yards during the past four outings, he has tossed at least one score in five straight games. With his team still in the playoff hunt, Stafford should be able to go this week at Tampa, facing the league’s second-worst pass defense. The Detroit signal-caller makes for a QB1 play.

DET QB Matthew Stafford - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Baltimore Ravens

In the Thanksgiving loss to the Vikings, Matthew Stafford suffered an ankle injury and came short of leading his team back. Against a good Minnesota defense, he threw for 250 yards and 2 TDs (both to Marvin Jones). He has passed for at least two scores the past four weeks and has 21 touchdown tosses versus 6 interceptions on the season. Stafford should be fine to play on Sunday, especially with a couple of extra days to get ready. However, he has another tough matchup against the league’s No. 2 pass defense. Once again, don’t expect a huge game from the Detroit QB.

DET QB Matthew Stafford - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Matthew Stafford continues to have a solid season. Last week in the comeback win over the Bears, he threw for 299 yards and 2 scores. He’s thrown 7 TDs the past three contests and 19 on the season, versus just 5 interceptions. In Week 4 at Minnesota, the Detroit QB threw for just 209 yards with no TDs facing a good Vikings defense ranked No. 11 against the pass. You have to keep on starting Stafford, but points may be at a premium in the rematch.
