Scouting report

IND WR Michael Pittman Jr. - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Michael Pittman Jr. is off to a nice start this season, with 25 catches on 34 targets through three games. He’s also shown a nice rapport with both Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew, providing some added security for fantasy managers concerned about who’s at quarterback in Indianapolis. He was a big part of the Colts’ victory over the Ravens last week, catching nine balls for 77 yards. He has at least eight catches in each game this year.

This week, Pittman has a tough matchup against the Rams, who rank eighth in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Pittman should still see plenty of targets, however, and his production so far this season makes him worthy of using as a WR2 option. Start him.

IND WR Michael Pittman Jr. - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Baltimore Ravens

Michael Pittman Jr. is off to a pretty good start this season with 16 catches, 153 yards, and a touchdown through two games. Most notably, he has 23 targets, with double-digits in each game. Fantasy managers who used a mid-round pick on him are happy to see him looking more like his 2021 self than the 2022 version.

The Ravens allowed decent days to Nico Collins in Week 1 and Tee Higgins last week, so there’s upside for Pittman in this matchup. Pittman seemed to hook up well with both Anthony Richardson and with Gardner Minshew the past two weeks, so he seems like a reasonably strong fantasy option moving forward. We have him ranked as a quality WR2 option this week.

IND WR Michael Pittman Jr. - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Houston Texans

Michael Pittman Jr. had a nice game in Week 1, leading the team with 11 targets, and ending up with eight receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Jaguars. It was good to see Pittman getting so many targets from rookie Anthony Richardson, and until we see differently, we can be optimistic about that connection continuing to grow as the season progresses.

This week, Pittman faces a Houston defense that gave up nine catches to Zay Flowers, but otherwise held the Ravens’ pass-catchers to just 169 receiving yards. Much of that could be game-script as they fall behind Baltimore late in the game, but this has been a trend with the Texans dating back to last season. Still, the Colts aren’t exactly a lock to win this game, so expect another busy day for Pittman. We have him conservatively ranked as a WR3 option, but he has WR2 upside as the top target in Indianapolis.

IND WR Michael Pittman Jr. - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Michael Pittman Jr. had a down year after breaking out in 2021, finishing the season with 925 yards on 99 receptions. He also scored only four touchdowns, despite considerable size at 6-foot-4, 223 lbs. We don’t know what we’re going to get from Pittman this season, but the play of rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson is likely to be the determining factor.

Pittman kicks off the season against the Jaguars, who ranked 24th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers a year ago. He’s risky since we don’t know what to expect from the rookie Richardson, but it’s hard to imagine the quarterback play will be worse than it was in 2022. We have Pittman conservatively ranked as a low-end WR3 option, and that feels about right for all the unknowns. Start him with caution.

IND WR Michael Pittman Jr. - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Michael Pittman struggled along with the rest of the Colts’ offense last season, finishing with a modest 925 yards and four touchdowns on 99 receptions. He was targeted more and caught more balls than he did in his breakout 2021 year, but his yards per reception plummeted three full yards from 12.3 to 9.3. Pittman should benefit from any improvement at the quarterback position. Matt Ryan was horrible last year - 25th among 31 qualified players in QBR per ESPN. If Gardner Minshew wins the starting job, he should be able to help Pittman get back on track. Pittman profiles as a solid red zone threat as well, if the Colts can consistently get down there and if the new coaching staff decides to throw the ball in those situations. So some positive touchdown regression seems likely.

Fantasy Downside
While we hope Minshew is better than Ryan was last year, there’s no guarantee that he is. Also, if the rookie Anthony Richardson ends up starting early on, it could be a tough season for Pittman once again. Richardson is an electric athlete but needs some work as a passer, which may limit Pittman’s upside.

2023 Bottom Line
Pittman’s risk is baked into his ADP, as he’s one of the few players likely to lead his team in targets and still available as late as round nine of drafts. We have him ranked as a WR3 option, which seems like his floor if Minshew starts, and about right if Richardson is behind center. He seems worth the gamble at his relatively affordable cost right now.

IND WR Michael Pittman Jr. - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New York Giants

Michael Pittman Jr. struggled last week with Nick Foles behind center, gaining just 39 yards on four receptions. He was targeted seven times, so that’s a good sign, but it’s hard to trust anyone in this offense.

This week, Pittman faces a Giants defense that ranks 18th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. We have him ranked as a fringe WR3 option on a struggling team. It sounds like Nick Foles is going to be the quarterback again, so keep expectations in check and steer clear of this offense if possible.

IND WR Michael Pittman Jr. - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Michael Pittman Jr. only had 60 yards last week against the Vikings, but caught 10 balls on 14 targets, salvaging the day in PPR formats. Pittman has been pretty quiet for much of the season and only has two touchdowns all year, but he’s getting the ball. His 86 receptions are tied for seventh in the league with Davante Adams.

This week, Pittman has a tough matchup against a surging Chargers defense that ranks fifth in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. He’s also dealing with a quarterback change to Nick Foles, but it’s not like Matt Ryan was lighting the world on fire. Start Pittman as a low-end WR2 option with the volume he’s likely to get, but temper expectations. Downgrade him a little in standard scoring formats.
