PIT RB Najee Harris - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Denver Broncos

After an offseason of saying how the Steelers wanted to get Jaylen Warren more involved, Najee Harris looked like a bell cow for the Steelers. With 20 carries and 2 targets, he vastly out-touched Warren who only saw 4 total touches. Harris looks locked in for a bigger workload than we were expecting.

While Harris wasn't super efficient on his touches, his workload will occasionally lead him to big weeks if this keeps up. Denver isn't an imposing defense on the ground and Arthur Smith would be smart to follow Seattle and Kenneth Walker's lead on how to ground and pound the Broncos. Harris is an RB2 this week and as long as this workload split continues should be viewed that way.

PIT RB Najee Harris - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 @ Atlanta Falcons
The introduction of Arthur Smith as the Steelers offensive coordinator should ultimately benefit Najee Harris despite the constant concerns about Smith from anyone who rostered a Falcon the last few seasons. The offense will skew run-heavy under Smith, but will also target running backs out of the backfield in the passing game as well.

The matchup against Atlanta isn't the best game environment on the weekend, but it could be a solid one if the new-look Falcons manage to be more explosive and faster-paced than we expect. Harris remains the goal-line back and while he likely won't be the RB1 or RB2 most expected the last few seasons, he still looks like he should have flex appeal.

PIT RB Najee Harris - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
It wasn't a great offseason, but there are some key reasons for optimism for Najee Harris in 2024. First, Arthur Smith. Say what you will about Smith, and a lot has been said, but the man can draw up a run game and that will benefit Harris greatly over whatever Matt Canada was doing for most of 2023. Second, the longer Russell Wilson is the starter the better for Harris as he'll have a higher chance of dump-offs versus if Justin Fields were the starter. The Steelers also used significant draft capital on offensive line help.

Fantasy Downside
It's never great when your fifth-year option is declined and the head coach talks up your committee member all off-season. While things have been more positive in camp, Harris is still somewhat inefficient, finishing outside the top 25 running backs in both yards per carry and yards after contact. Add in Arthur Smith's questionable personnel decisions and there is some room for bust potential even at RB24 by ADP. He could also lose more work to Jaylen Warren.

2024 Bottom Line
Harris finished as RB20 in half-point PPR scoring last season and has some clear positives and negatives for this season. Arthur Smith is clearly going to run the football a ton and Harris likely has the majority of the goal line work. However, he'll likely lose whatever passing down work there is to Jaylen Warren, and could take a hit further if Justin Fields takes over as the starter. At RB19, he fits better on half-point PPR sites and would be buying there and opting elsewhere on full-point PPR sites.

PIT RB Najee Harris - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Seattle Seahawks
Najee Harris tied his season-high with 19 carries. He ended up with 78 yards. But for the second week, he wasn't targeted in the passing game. Harris has had a better second half of the season even though he is still splitting time with Jaylen Warren.

Harris faces the Seahawks who are ranked 29th in aFPA to running backs. Expect another heavy workload for him so the numbers in standard leagues should help team managers in their playoff games. Start Harris as a RB3 or Flex for Week 17.

PIT RB Najee Harris - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Najee Harris had 12 carries for 33 yards last Sunday and although he continues to get playing time along with Jaylen Warren, he has slowed down the last couple weeks. Harris has been struggling with a knee issue, but is expected to play.

Next up is Cincinnati. The Bengals are ranked 13th in aFPA to running backs. Harris had 15 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown when the Steelers beat Cincy several weeks ago. However, Pittsburgh has not been running the ball as efficiently in recent weeks.

Start Harris as a low-end RB3 or Flex for Week 16. Unfortunately, we don't expect a repeat performance from the last Cincinnati game as the Steelers offense has been lost the last three weeks.

PIT RB Najee Harris - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Indianapolis Colts
Najee Harris got 15 touches again and the results were minimal with 48 total yards. Although he has had some decent fantasy games the second half of the season, the Steelers inefficient offense has held him back at times. But the coaching staff feels he still needs to get the ball.

Harris has a great matchup this week against the Colts who are ranked dead last in aFPA to running backs. The Steelers only have seven touchdowns in the last five games and that bring Harris' stock down. Start him for Week 15 because of the great matchup but only as a high-end RB3 or Flex.

PIT RB Najee Harris - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. New England Patriots
Najee Harris rushed 16 times for 63 yards and added two receptions for 14 yards last Sunday. The running back has been getting touches the last two weeks with the new offensive coordinator and even though he is splitting carries and playing time with Jaylen Warren, the Steelers are going run-heavy.

Harris faces the Patriots on Thursday and New England is ranked seventh in aFPA to running backs. The Pats defense has been good and it won't be easy for the Steelers to run the football, but volume should at least make Harris viable for the game.

Start Harris as a WR3 or Flex for Week 14. The offense will have a new quarterback and that could change the way the Steelers call the game, but Harris should still get 15 touches.
