Fantasy Upside
O.J. Howard is set up for a potentially big year. He showcased his talents last season, finishing as the No. 10 tight end in standard formats despite missing six games. With DeSean Jackson and Adam Humphries gone, there are more targets likely headed in Howard’s direction. He’s a big-bodied athletic tight end, and has the talent to finish top five in his position.
Fantasy Downside
Bruce Arians takes over the head coaching duties in 2019, and his offenses haven’t produced star tight ends. While in Arizona, Arians once said of the position, “We pay Larry (Fitzgerald) and those guys too much money to throw it to the tight ends. They’re here to block.” There’s also a slight durability issue with Howard considering he’s missed games in each of the last two seasons due to injuries.
2019 Bottom Line
Howard has a very high ceiling in 2019, but he does carry some risk. As for Arians’ scheme, the coach admitted in the offseason that he’s never had a tight end like Howard before. His comments should scare off potential Cameron Brate buyers more than Howard. Considering there aren’t many good tight end options, Howard is a player you should look into drafting because he’s very talented in what could be a high-powered offense. He was the No. 6 tight end in fantasy before having to be sidelined with an injury in 2018.
