Scouting report

KC QB Patrick Mahomes - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Patrick Mahomes threw for 291 yards on 20/28 passing in an Opening Night win over the Ravens. He threw one touchdown pass as he quickly began building a connection with rookie Xavier Worthy. That connection will continue to grow now that it appears Hollywood Brown will not play this season. Still, Mahomes has his weapons ready for battle against a Bengals team desperate to avoid their third straight 0-2 start. No need to shy away from Mahomes, as if there ever was a reason to.

KC QB Patrick Mahomes - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Baltimore Ravens

For the second straight year, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will open at home on Opening Night as defending Super Bowl champions. Last year, the Detroit Lions spoiled the party. This time, it's the Baltimore Ravens coming to Arrowhead. As for Mahomes, he'll get his first chance to test the waters with one of his new deep threats in rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy. He'll have to wait on Hollywood Brown, who is out with a shoulder injury.

Mahomes will face a stringy Ravens defense that added speed in the defensive backfield with rookie Nate Wiggins to go along with Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton. But this is still Patrick Mahomes we're talking about. As last year's playoffs proved, never bet against No. 15. He's a QB1 in fantasy. He may not be top option, but he is still a top option.

KC QB Patrick Mahomes - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

When a QB7 finish is considered disappointing, you know you're doing something right as a quarterback in your career. That's the case with Patrick Mahomes, who oversaw what became a bit of a struggling Chiefs offense in the regular season. Of course, we all know what happened in the end. Mahomes hoisted the Lombardi Trophy for a third time. Still, it was career-lows in passing yards (4,183), touchdowns (27), and rushing touchdowns (0). The good news is that the offense added Hollywood Brown in free agency and drafted Xavier Worthy, the man who set a Combine record with a 4.21 40-yard dash. The Chiefs offense is scary again as they set their sights on a third straight Super Bowl.

Fantasy Downside

Last season showed what the downside of Mahomes can look like and it's still pretty darn good. If we're going to nitpick anything, it's that the Chiefs struggled with drops last season. Their 38 total drops were the highest in the league. If those get cleaned up, Mahomes will be just fine.

2024 Bottom Line

Bottom line, you're drafting Mahomes. Even if last season happens again in bits and pieces, Mahomes is elite and can overcome the offense's struggles. He may not be QB1 in fantasy circles (most have Josh Allen in that spot), but Mahomes is still up there among the top tiers. Don't overthink Mahomes.

KC QB Patrick Mahomes - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The Chiefs offense struggled last week, but Patrick Mahomes salvaged a poor day with a nice late-game drive that resulted in a score. Mahomes finished the day with 235 pass yards, one touchdown and an interception. He also added a season-high 53 yards on the ground. Mahomes hasn't fully looked like himself lately. In his last four games, he's averaging 255.3 pass yards with a 5-5 TD-INT ratio. But this week he draws a favorable matchup against the Bengals (24th aFPA) in what should be a bounce back game. Over the past four weeks, the Bengals have given up the 6th-most average fantasy points to QBs. Mahomes should still be viewed as a top five option at QB in Week 17.

KC QB Patrick Mahomes - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Patrick Mahomes had a strong outing last week, throwing for 305 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was Mahomes' first 300-yard game since Week 7 and his first multi-touchdown game since Week 12. Mahomes should keep up his strong production this week as he gets a decent matchup vs. the Raiders (15th aFPA). Mahomes played Las Vegas just a few weeks ago and finished with 298 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. Mahomes will be a strong start in Week 16 and should be viewed as a top five option at QB.

KC QB Patrick Mahomes - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New England Patriots

Patrick Mahomes had an OK outing last week, throwing for 271 yards with one touchdown and an interception. He nearly had another touchdown at the end of the game, but you might have heard about an offensive offsides call. Mahomes has struggled a bit in recent weeks with lower yardage totals and turnovers. From Week 8 through Week 14 he's QB19 in total scoring, only above Tommy DeVito at QB20. He'll look to bounce back this week as he faces the Patriots (17th aFPA). Mahomes still has an incredibly high ceiling, which we've seen at times this season. He's also been just one drop or penalty short of a big play in multiple games this year. He should still be viewed as a top five option at his position in Week 15.

KC QB Patrick Mahomes - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Buffalo Bills

Patrick Mahomes had a subpar game last week, at least when it comes to Mahomes standards. He finished with 210 yards, one touchdown and an interception with 26 yards on the ground. Mahomes hasn't been as dominant this season as he was last year. In 2022, Mahomes averaged 25.2 fantasy points and this year he's down to 19.3. He's still good enough to be an every week starter, but certainly hasn't put up the production many expected from him. He'll look to bounce back this week in a favorable matchup vs. the Bills (27th aFPA). Mahomes played well against Buffalo last season with 338 yards and two touchdowns. He should be viewed as a top five option at QB in Week 14.
