Scouting report

TB RB Peyton Barber - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Chicago Bears

Peyton Barber played well last week, averaging a season-high 4.1 yards per carry. But he didn't get the ball very much, finishing the game with a season-low eight touches (33 yards). Tampa was in comeback mode for most of the game, which meant the rushing attack was essentially abandoned. Barber is now averaging less than 50 yards per game. He has scored zero TDs and has just one reception in 2018.

This week he gets a tough task against the Bears, who have allowed the fewest fantasy points to opposing backs this season. The Bears haven't given up a rushing touchdown to an RB and have allowed the second-fewest rushing yards (196) on the season. All of this spells out a disaster for Barber, so he should only be viewed as a low-end RB3 option.

TB RB Peyton Barber - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Peyton Barber is getting touches, 19 and 16 carries, respectively, but isn't doing much with them. Last week he averaged a measly 1.4 yards per carry and he finished again without a touchdown. It's hard to imagine he continues to struggle like this with so many looks, but he's certainly been a letdown so far.

He faces the Steelers this week, who have allowed the seventh-fewest fantasy points to opposing backs. Although some of that may be because their pass defense has been so poor. Still, we don't expect Barber to run wild in Week 3. He's a low-end RB2 or RB3 play this week.

TB RB Peyton Barber - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Peyton Barber was easily the Bucs' No. 1 back in Week 1. In fact, second-round rookie Ronald Jones was a healthy scratch. Only two other RBs touched the ball, for a combined three touches for nine yards.

Barber wasn't great, finishing with 69 yards on 19 carries (no receptions). But those are essentially the numbers we expect from him moving forward. He gets a tough task this week against the Eagles where we expect another high-carry, sub-100 game from Barber. We like him as an RB3 option vs. Philadelphia.

TB RB Peyton Barber - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New Orleans Saints

After a strong offseason of hype for second-round running back Ronald Jones, it appears Peyton Barber will hold his ground and be the Bucs' guy in the backfield. Jones had plenty of struggles in training camp and the preseason, while Barber did enough to earn the starting job.

There's nothing too exciting about Barber aside from the fact he'll likely get plenty of touches. He gets a bad matchup against the Saints in Week 1, which is why we view him more as an RB2 or RB3 option.

TB RB Peyton Barber - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Peyton Barber is the Bucs’ starting back to begin the season. He was the team’s leading rusher a year ago, despite not getting the most carries. Barber is a power back who is certainly capable of carrying the ball multiple times a game while gaining just enough yards to keep the chains moving.

Fantasy Downside

There’s not a lot of appeal to Barber outside of the fact that he’s starting. He’s a power back, but he hasn’t really been a touchdown machine. With all of the backs on Tampa’s roster, he likely won’t get enough carries to get enough yards to be relevant for fantasy purposes.

2018 Bottom Line

Barber might have a few fantasy games of relevance if he’s able to find the end zone, but outside of that, there’s not much to like here. We expect rookie Ronald Jones to be the starter, even if it takes a while to get there. In the meantime, Barber will just be a frustrating obstacle for fantasy owners. He’s not really worth a spot for fantasy purposes.

TB RB Peyton Barber - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. New Orleans Saints

Peyton Barber received the most carries on the Bucs last week with 13, finishing with 51 yards. But Tampa Bay is going to a pretty split committee with Barber on the field for 25 snaps, Charles Sims with 24, and Doug Martin with 17. Even Jacquizz Rodgers had two snaps.

Barber appears to be the lead back when it comes to rushing, but his ceiling is limited due to playing time. He gets a decent matchup against the Saints this week, who have allowed a score to a back in four straight games. Barber isn't a super strong option, but he should be fine as a FLEX option or in the RB3 slot.

TB RB Peyton Barber - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Carolina Panthers

Peyton Barber got a surprise start last week when Doug Martin was made inactive for violating team rules. Martin has faded out of Tampa Bay's plans, and Barber has now led the team in rushing for three straight games (102 yards, 58, 53). We expect him to get another start this week in a tough matchup against Carolina.

The Panthers have allowed the third-fewest fantasy points to opposing backs this season, the fifth-fewest rushing yards per game in the league (91.6), and the third-fewest amount of rushing touchdowns (7).

Due to the poor matchup and Tampa's strange backfield, we view Barber as an RB3 or FLEX play this week.
