Scouting report

SD QB Philip Rivers - Week 12, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Jacksonville

Philip Rivers threw for just 178 yards last week adding his eighth interception of the season last week. It wasn't a good performance coming off a bye week in a home game against KC after Rivers was having a real nice year.

As a result, Rivers drops a bit in our rankings this week, coming in as a low-end QB1 play in a favorable matchup against the Jags, who are 25th in allowing fantasy points to QBs. For Rivers, it may very well be a case of not having much help around him. The run game is struggling and top WR target Keenan Allen is done for the year, while TE Antonio Gates isn't 100-percent. Rivers is suddenly looking risky as a fantasy play. On top of that, in Week 13 it's Denver (1st) and Week 14 is KC again (6th) so he doesn't have favorable matchups in the foreseeable future.

SD QB Philip Rivers - Week 11, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs Kansas City
When we last saw Philip Rivers in Week 9, he put up 280 yards and a TD in a loss to the Bears. For the fourth time in the last five games, Rivers attempted over 40 passes. This week, Rivers gets the Chiefs in what is an average matchup as KC is 15th in allowing fantasy points to QBs at this point in the season. They did force Peyton Manning into four INTs last week and continue to play well after having a banged up secondary much of the season. Rivers still gets a lower-end QB1 ranking this week and will, of course, be without WR Keenan Allen and has have a banged up Antonio Gates at TE. But still without a real threat of a run game, Rivers should be responsible for a lot of the offense this week.

SD QB Philip Rivers - Week 9, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Chicago

Philip Rivers put up another impressive fantasy game last week, throwing for 301 yards and three TDs. He didn't throw an INT for the third game this season.

This week, Rivers has another great matchup at home against the Bears who are 26th in allowing fantasy points to WRs. Despite the loss of top target Keenan Allen for the season, Rivers is still ranked second on our QB list for Week 9. It's hard to argue with the numbers he's put up, going over 300 yards for five straight weeks. With no real threat of a running game, even more falls on Rivers' throwing shoulder and he's a must-start in any format.

SD QB Philip Rivers - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Baltimore
Philip Rivers had another big fantasy game last week, throwing for 336 yards and three TDs, but did throw two more INTs. Without much of a running game right now, any chance for success is falling on Rivers. He has averaged about 50 attempts over the last three weeks, while throwing for a total of just over 1,000 yards. This week could be much of the same going against a Ravens team that's tougher against the run. Baltimore is ranked 31st in allowing fantasy points to QBs and as a result, Rivers is our No. 2 QB this week in a must-start matchup.

SD QB Philip Rivers - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Oakland

Philip Rivers had a huge game last week, throwing for 503 yards and two TDs without an interception against the Packers. Without much of a running game, and falling behind for much of the contest, Rivers chucked it around 65 times in Week 6.

He has a potentially favorable matchup this week against the Raiders, who are 21st in allowing fantasy points to QBs. The team is waiting for rookie Melvin Gordon to break out and give them a running attack, but Gordon's fumbling issues came back up last week. Rivers is ranked sixth this week on our list making him a very good QB1 option. He's got two more favorable matchups coming up with Baltimore and Chicago before their Week 10 bye.

SD QB Philip Rivers - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Green Bay

Philip Rivers had another big fantasy day last week, throwing for 365 yards and two more TDs. He did add his fifth INT of the year in the loss, however.

Rivers continues to be the go-to guy on the Bolts offense as the run game continues to struggle this season. This week, SD travels to Green Bay in a tough matchup against the Packers, who are eighth in allowing fantasy points to QBs. GB is tough at home, but given the struggles of the Chargers defense, Rivers will have to put some points up in this contest to most likely keep it close. He comes in at his usual spot, which is a low-end QB1.

SD QB Philip Rivers - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs Pittsburgh

Philip Rivers had a big day in Week 4 against the Browns at home. The Browns came in playing well against the pass, but matchups on paper don't always matter to Rivers. He ended up with 358 yards and three TDs, arguably his best fantasy game of the season.

This week, Rivers hosts the Steelers who are 18th in allowing fantasy points to QBs. Rivers again comes in as a low-end QB1 option and there's no question some points could be scored in this one. The Steelers welcome back Martavis Bryant and Rivers gets back Antonio Gates. Gates should be a nice addition for Rivers, especially in the red zone, which could help if the Bolts are missing WRs Stevie Johnson and/or Malcom Floyd.
