Fantasy Upside
Rivers’ stated desire to play out his contract instead of working on an extension -- along with talk that the veteran QB wasn’t interested in moving to Los Angeles if the Chargers relocate there -- led to pre-draft trade rumors but no move materialized. Whether it was all a negotiating ploy or not, Rivers will continue plying his trade in San Diego in 2015. In addition, the hope is he’ll be healthier this year than last. Reasons for optimism? Rivers could benefit from an improved rushing attack and the addition of rookie RB Melvin Gordon could facilitate that. The return of Danny Woodhead could help on the passing side of the backfield equation.
Fantasy Downside
As mentioned above, health was an issue in 2014. Reports surfaced that Rivers played the last half of 2014 with a bulging disc in his lower back. He was intercepted seven times in the final three weeks of the season as the Chargers lost three of their last four games and the belief is the injury was a factor.
Bottom Line
Rivers will continue to rely on trusted targets like Antonio Gates (although he will miss the first four games this year to suspension), Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd. That alone is enough to keep Rivers in the high-end QB2 conversation. A coaching staff that is willing to let their QB carry the offense if need be also works in his favor. Definitely a value at his current QB14 ADP.
