Scouting report

NYG WR Richie James - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Richie James hasn’t put up big numbers this season, but he’s been an active part of the offense in New York, including receiving a season-high 11 targets last week against the Vikings. Expect James to continue to have a role, but don’t expect another 11 targets in what should be a low-scoring affair against the reeling Colts. We have him ranked outside starter territory this week.

NYG WR Richie James - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Richie James had three catches for 20 yards last week against the Commanders. His usage has been inconsistent at best and now Isaiah Hodgins seems to be developing a nice rapport with Daniel Jones and is functioning as the WR2 in the offense. James is droppable in all league formats.

SF WR Richie James - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at New Orleans Saints

Richie James blew up last week against the Packers as the rest of the 49ers’ wide receivers were either hurt or on the COVID list. He caught nine of the 13 balls thrown his way for 184 yards and a touchdown. It was a great outing for the speedy James, usually known for his return prowess.

This week, James faces a Saints defense that ranks 20th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. If the 49ers are still down Deebo Samuel and Kendrick Bourne, consider James a sneaky boom-or-bust WR3 option. If either Samuel or Bourne plays, along with Brandon Aiyuk, who’s expected to return, then James should go back to the bench until we see how many snaps he gets when the corps is healthy. Watch the inactives closely.

SF WR Richie James - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Green Bay Packers

Richie James may get a chance against the Packers with Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, and Deebo Samuel out. James is set to start, along with Trent Taylor, in a game where the 49ers are likely to trail, giving him some deep league upside as a risky WR3 option.

SF WR Richie James - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Los Angeles Rams

Richie James failed to catch a pass last week and while he remains a weapon in the return game, his snaps dropped down to only 8% in on Monday night against the Browns. James should only be rostered in return-yardage leagues and should not be counted on in the vast majority of fantasy formats.

SF WR Richie James - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Cleveland Browns

Richie James is tied for third on the team in targets, but that’s still only eight through three games. He caught a touchdown in Week 1, but has since only caught three passes for 29 yards. James saw his snaps dip from 46% in Week 2 to 35% in Week 3, while Dante Pettis saw 42% of the Week 3 snaps. It’s possible Pettis is starting to phase out James, which is probably what the 49ers want to happen anyway. James has some big-play potential and is still the primary return specialist, but he should stay on waivers in non-return yardage leagues.

SF WR Richie James - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

It was encouraging to see Richie James get four targets last week, but he caught only one ball for seven yards. Outside of the random big-play touchdown, James is unlikely to have much long-term fantasy value. He’s the primary return specialist for the 49ers and is at least third on the depth chart on a good day. He should remain on waivers in all league formats.
