GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Lions

The worry with starting Green Bay Packers' tight end Robert Tonyan has been that you know he won't get massive volume; you're just hoping that one of his few catches in a game will end up in the end zone. That wasn't the case in Week 1, where he grabbed just 1-of-2 looks for five yards before the game got out of hand.

Week 2 should be a better spot for the big red-zone receiving threat, with the Detroit Lions on tap at home for Tonyan's Packers. An implied total of 30 points means the Pack shouldn't be playing catch-up as much and could dump the ball off to Tonyan more – plus the scoring potential is obviously increased. Our models project him for just 2.7 catches for 31.8 yards and 0.6 touchdowns, however, as the TE14 in Week 2. You can probably find a better streaming option.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Saints
Tight end Robert "Big Bob" Tonyan is back and fantasy managers have to hope we'll see him charge across the goal line another 11 times in 2021, just like last year. This week, against the New Orleans Saints, isn't a bad way to start that mission, as our models project Tonyan for 34.1 receiving yards and 0.5 touchdowns on 3.1 catches. The New Orleans pass defense is a bit lacking (just 12th-strongest against tight ends), and none of the linebackers on the depth chart have the size and speed necessary to completely shut down "Big Bob" on Sunday. He's our ninth-best tight end, so there are better options out there, but when a pass-catcher plays with Aaron Rodgers, there's always some decent upside for them.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Packers tight end Robert Tonyan, a former undrafted free agent, broke out in 2020 to the tune of 52 receptions for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. That was good for a fantasy finish as the third-best half-PPR tight end last season and top-five in points per game. The man known as “Big Bob” put up big boy numbers as a prime red-zone target for Green Bay (16.4% target share inside the opposing 20-yard line), hauling in 10-of-11 targets, including seven touchdowns. He showed his versatility, however, by catching six of his nine deep (20-plus air yards) targets for 186 yards and his other four scores.

Fantasy Downside
Tonyan’s overall target rate (targets per route run) of 18.0% was just 89th among qualifying tight ends, and even his 12.9% team target share was just barely inside the top-20. To sustain TE1-level fantasy productivity into 2021, Tonyan will need to increase the volume of looks he’s earning or keep up his absurd scoring rate – the latter of which will almost surely regress downward. Physical possession receiver Devin Funchess – who opted out for the 2020 season – may end up cutting into his valuable goal-line targets as well.

2021 Bottom Line
The Packers will likely continue to need Tonyan’s red-zone contributions, and his skill set is versatile enough that he likely won’t fall completely off the map, but tempered expectations are needed for the sequel to Tonyan’s sensational 2020 season. Our models project him as the TE9, in a flat tier from ninth to twelfth at the position, and ADP shows im drafted in a similar range. You can do way worse than a red-zone monster tied to one of the best offenses in the league as your low-end TE1 when drafting them in the ninth to tenth rounds of your fantasy draft.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Chicago

Tonyan had a rough outing last week against the Tennessee Titans as he only had one reception for 17 yards. It was difficult for any other Green Bay receivers to get anything going with Davante Adams’ monster game. Tonyan should have more success this week against the Chicago Bears as they rank 30th in aFPA to TEs this season. Count on Tonyan as a solid TE1 option this week.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs Tennessee

Tonyan kept his touchdown streak alive last week against the Carolina Panthers as he caught all three of his targets for 18 yards and one touchdown. That makes five consecutive games in which Tonyan has scored a TD as he leads all TEs in the category with 10. Even with all that, Tonyan was snubbed for first Pro Bowl as Evan Engram was chosen over him(*sigh*). Against a poor Tennessee Titans defense, expect high-end TE1 production from Tonyan and maybe even a little extra “sauce” to scorn Pro Bowl voters.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs Carolina

Tonyan had yet another strong game last week against the Detroit Lions as he caught all five of his targets for 36 yards and one touchdown. Tonyan is back to being one of the few true TE1s again as he now has four consecutive games with five targets and a touchdown in each. Aaron Rodgers has shown trust in Tonyan all season, and now that he’s fully healthy, it’s clear that he is a safe bet at the position. Trust Baby Kittle as a high-end TE1 option in the semifinals of the fantasy football playoffs.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Detroit

Tonyan had another strong game last week against the Philadelphia Eagles as he caught 4-of-5 targets for 39 yards and one touchdown. This makes three games in a row in which Tonyan has scored a touchdown and he appears to be back on track as Aaron Rodgers’ number two option in this offense. Even in a tougher-than-usual matchup against the Detroit Lions who rank 13th in aFPA to TEs this season, Tonyan should be viewed as a solid TE1 this week.
