TB WR Russell Gage - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Russell Gage is joining Tampa Bay after two solid seasons with Atlanta. Gage was the Falcons’ leading wide receiver last year, finishing 66-770-4 on 94 targets, which was good enough for a WR48 finish. And there is reason to believe he’ll top that in 2022. He joins a Bucs team that threw the ball 731 times last season (compared to the Falcons’ 573) and also lost Antonio Brown and Rob Gronkowski in the offseason. Chris Godwin is also still recovering from a torn ACL, which will put him out likely through October. This means Gage gets shot up into WR2 in one of the most productive offenses in the NFL. Even Tom Brady made note of this in the offseason, saying of Gage as the team’s WR2: “That is a very important role for an offense that throws the ball as much as we do." Even when Godwin returns, we saw Antonio Brown have a lot of success as a WR3 in this offense. Gage is likely on pace for a career season.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Gage has never been a dominant player throughout his career, finishing under 800 yards each season. He’s also never scored more than four touchdowns in a season. And while he’s projected to be in that No. 2 role, the Bucs also have some other interesting options at WR including Cyril Grayson, Jaelon Darden, Tyler Johnson, Breshad Perriman and Scotty Miller. Also, a lot of Gage’s value depends on when Godwin is able to return, which is unknown at the moment. If Godwin returns sooner than expected, then Gage only gets a limited amount of time in that WR2 role.

2022 Bottom Line
Assuming Godwin misses the first half of the season, Gage should turn into a real value play for Tampa Bay. Even when Godwin returns, Gage is a talented wide receiver who “can play 3 positions,” according to HC Todd Bowles. In 2020 when Evans, Godwin, and Brown were all on the field, they had a fairly even target distribution (Evans 19.5%, Godwin 18.9%, Brown 15.7%). Gage gets an upgrade at quarterback, and joins a much better offensive system in 2022. He’ll likely post career numbers, and should be viewed as a strong WR3 option ahead of the double digit rounds.

Week 17 vs Bills

Atlanta's offense left a lot to be desired against the Lions, resulting in pedestrian numbers for Russell Gage. And now he gets our No. 1 defense against opposing wide receivers in the Buffalo Bills. Still, there's some value in being the WR1 here, even if it is the Falcons. He's a low-end WR3 for the championship round.

Week 16 vs Lions

Another solid day for Russell Gage (8-91-1) as he has taken advantage well of his opportunities as the Falcons WR1 in the absence of Calvin Ridley. He's got a good chance to add another touchdown this week. Detroit has allowed 23 passing touchdowns this season. And Matt Ryan has been looking for Gage. In two of the last three games he has seen 12 targets and he has 23 catches in the span. Gage is a solid flex option this week.

ATL WR Russell Gage - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs 49ers

Russell Gage continues to perform well as the de facto WR1 in Atlanta. Three straight games and five out of eight with at least 60 yards. The touchdowns haven't been there, but he gets his hands on the ball, making him a solid flex option, especially against the 49ers, who are still banged up and down in the secondary.

Week 14 vs Panthers

It took a while, but Russell Gage finally had his coming-out party and looked like a WR1, catching 11 passes for 130 yards against the Buccaneers. He's settled in as the Falcons' best option and has become a solid flex option. He was actually shut out in the first meeting against the Panthers. Good chance that won't happen again this week.

Week 13 vs Buccaneers

Russell Gage has done a fine job filling the WR1 role in Atlanta while Calvin Ridley is out. If we take out the Carolina and Dallas games, Gage has at least six targets and four catches in the four remaining games since the bye and has been hovering around 50-60 yards with two total touchdowns in that time. He's the man on the outside in Atlanta. Still, it only adds up to be a flex play, but you can do a lot worse than Gage. He had seven targets and five catches in Week 2 at Tampa.

ATL WR Russell Gage - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs Patriots

No Falcons receiver played more than 35 snaps on Sunday, but it was Russell Gage that hit that high mark. Of course, he was targeted just three times and posted a goose egg. It doesn't get much easier for Gage and the Falcons' wide receivers. New England has been playing very good defense. The Falcons have a short week to figure out a game plan. Gage is a deep flex play at best.
