DEN QB Russell Wilson - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Kansas City Chiefs
Russell Wilson threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns last week against a tough Jets defense, but he did lose a fumble that was returned for a touchdown to seal the game and the Broncos lost 31-21. While Wilson has generally improved upon last year's disaster, the Broncos remain a bad team who are now 1-4 and there appears to be some tension boiling over between Wilson and new Head Coach Sean Payton. Now the Broncos travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs, who boast a defense that has suppressed opposing quarterback production this year (fifth-best in adjusted fantasy points allowed to QBs). Wilson's improvement with Payton in town (10th in yards per attempt) has him firmly back on the QB2 radar, but he is a tough sell as a single-QB starter this week even with the Broncos projected to be playing catch-up as 10 point underdogs.

DEN QB Russell Wilson - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. New York Jets
Russell Wilson took advantage of a great matchup in Week 4 by toasting the Bears for 223 passing yards and three touchdowns to finish as the week's QB9. Wilson's fantasy season is going much better than last year so far in 2023. He has finished the week as a fantasy QB1 in two out of four games so far, and is way ahead of last year's touchdown pace with nine passing scores through those four weeks. Wilson's underlying metrics are also solid. He ranks seventh in yards per attempt amongst quarterbacks, and is top-ten in total passing yards on the season. Wilson is working his way back onto the streaming radar in single-QB leagues, but he gets a tough matchup this week hosting the Jets' strong defense. Wilson's recent play makes him a borderline fantasy starter, but this week might be a good one to look elsewhere given the poor matchup.

DEN QB Russell Wilson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Chicago Bears
The Broncos got embarrassed in Week 3 against the Dolphins, primarily because their defense conceded 70 points, but Russell Wilson and the offense also continued to struggle with consistent production. Wilson logged a season-high 38 pass attempts and posted 306 yards, but only threw one touchdown and did not a record a single rush attempt. Through three weeks, Wilson has finished as a QB2 twice while posting a top-five finish at the position in Week 2. The early returns on Sean Payton's offense show some improvement from last year, but this unit is still far from an offensive powerhouse and Wilson currently ranks 10th in fantasy points per game, largely because of Week 2. Luckily, Wilson and the Broncos get the abysmal Chicago defense in Week 4. The matchup makes Wilson a viable streaming option in single-QB leagues.

DEN QB Russell Wilson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Miami Dolphins
Two games into the Sean Payton era in Denver, Russell Wilson certainly looks better than he did last year but the Broncos are still far from an offensive powerhouse. Wilson's numbers from Week 2 look great as he threw for 308 yards with three touchdowns while rushing for 56 more yards. Wilson did throw an interception, and his passing numbers are slightly inflated by a Hail Mary touchdown that deflected off of multiple players as time expired. Wilson's 7.4 yards per attempt only ranks 24th amongst quarterbacks so far in 2023, but his five passing touchdowns through two games is a vast improvement over his 2022 pace. Denver gets a tough matchup this week traveling down to Miami to take on a hot Dolphins team. Miami has held both Justin Herbert and Mac Jones in check so far this season, meaning Wilson is still tough to stomach as a starter in single-QB leagues. He remains a QB2 heading into Week 3.

DEN QB Russell Wilson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Washington Commanders
Russell Wilson started off hot in his first game under Head Coach Sean Payton by completing 17 of 19 passes in the first half for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there as he only finished with 177 passing yards and no additional touchdowns in the second half. The Broncos were obviously missing top receiving option Jerry Jeudy, but Wilson's second half looked eerily similar to 2022 which is not a good sign. The offense was functional in the first half, which provides some hope for a bounce back performance in Week 2 against a Commanders defense that struggled to put the lowly Cardinals away last Sunday, but Wilson is nothing better than a QB2 heading into Week 2. Jerry Jeudy returning this week would give Wilson a small boost in fantasy outlook.

DEN QB Russell Wilson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Las Vegas Raiders
Russell Wilson will start his attempt at a comeback campaign on Sunday when the Broncos host the Raiders in a Week 1 divisional matchup. The Broncos are coming off a disastrous offensive season in 2022, but their Week 1 matchup pits them against a Raiders defense that was firmly below-average last season and does not look to be significantly improved from this offseason. The Raiders finished bottom-five in yards allowed per game in 2022, and they were especially poor against the pass where they allowed the fourth most yards per game to opponents at 242.9 YPG. Wilson's recent decline prevents him from reaching the QB1 ranks for Week 1 even with Sean Payton now calling plays, but this is a good matchup for him to start off 2023. Unfortunately, he will likely have to make do without his top pass catcher as Jerry Jeudy is currently struggling with a hamstring issue he picked up in training camp. Wilson will be an intriguing player to watch in Week 1, and he fits into the QB2 tier in a good home matchup against Las Vegas.

DEN QB Russell Wilson - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

2023 Fantasy Upside
There will likely be skepticism regarding Russell Wilson's continued fantasy viability given the abject disaster that was the Broncos offense last season. Wilson himself looked terrible for the majority of the season before stringing together some decent performances in December. That being said, Wilson will receive a major coaching upgrade with the arrival of Sean Payton in Denver, which provides some hope for a bounce back season in 2023. Payton is one of the better offensive minds in the current NFL era, and there are some reasons for optimism when looking at a merger of he and Wilson's track records. Wilson has some decent weapons to work with as well, particularly Jerry Jeudy, who showed a nice connection with Wilson at the end of last year and emerged as a legitimate No. 1 option in the passing game. Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, and Greg Dulcich round out a workable supporting cast, and the Broncos added Samaje Perine as a receiving option out of the backfield this offseason. Betting on Wilson in fantasy is inherently a bet on Payton's ability to right the ship to some extent, but there are reasons for optimism coming off last year's nightmare.

2023 Fantasy Downside
Wilson's 2022 metrics are a sea of red flags for fantasy, and he will turn 35 years old during this coming season. Wilson's 7.3 yards per attempt was the second-worst of his career, his 60.5% completion percentage was the worst he's ever posted, and his 16 passing touchdowns was also easily a career-low. Instead of competing for a Super Bowl berth, the Broncos averaged 16.9 points per game, good for last in the NFL, and subjected fans to enough three-and-outs to make their eyes bleed. Wilson's age is also affecting his mobility. He has not cleared 300 rushing yards either of the last two seasons, and he took 55 sacks last year for a league-leading 368 yards lost. Perhaps most concerning was Wilson's drop in accuracy, particularly on deep throws. Wilson attempted 87 deep passes in 2022 which led the league, but his accuracy rating on those throws ranked 28th amongst QBs. The drop-off in efficiency last year was startling, and it should probably be expected to bounce back to some extent this year, but we wouldn't blame anyone for being out on Wilson as a QB1 given his recent decline in overall play.

2023 Bottom Line
Wilson's play should improve to some extent just due to positive regression and having a competent NFL Head Coach and play caller on the sidelines. However, it is clear Wilson is now past his prime and last year's performance was very concerning on a number of fronts. Wilson's suddenly nosediving efficiency as a passer renders him as nothing more than a QB2 for fantasy until we see signs of life with Payton at the helm.
