Scouting report

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Sam Darnold had his best game since early in the season, throwing for 280 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Indianapolis. He did throw a pick but was fairly efficient the whole game. Darnold is making progress but still plays like a rookie the majority of time on the field.

The Jets have a good matchup this week against the Vikings who are 30th in aFPA to quarterbacks. However, Darnold will be without his favorite target Quincy Enunwa. Continue to keep the rookie on the bench. Darnold still hasn't been consistent enough to consider for a fantasy team roster.

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Indianapolis Colts
Sam Darnold did throw three touchdowns last Sunday, but his other numbers are alarming. His completion rate was less than 50% and he threw for under 200 yards. The Jets did get a win, but it was the running game that was the main reason. Darnold keeps playing like a rookie and that reflects his fantasy status.

The Colts are 25th in aFPA to quarterbacks but even that matchup advantage doesn't help Darnold for Week 6. Keep him on the bench or waiver wire against Indy as he doesn't make the cut this weekend.

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Denver Broncos
After a strong start to the season, Sam Darnold has come back down to earth. He did not throw an interception last week after throwing four the previous two games, but that is one of the few positives. Like any rookie, there is a learning curve and Darnold is on it.

THe Jets face the Broncos who are 13th in aFPA to quarterbacks. It's hard to figure out how quickly Darnold is going to get better so for now he remains a waiver wire quarterback. Keep him on the bench for Week 5.

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Jacksonville Jaguars

Sam Darnold had his worst game as a pro last Thursday, completing only 48 percent of his passes while throwing two interceptions. He threw for a season-low 169 yards and did not throw a TD pass for the first time in his short career. Darnold will have days like this, as most rookies do.

It won't get any easier this Sunday as Darnold faces a strong Jaguars defense. However, the Jags have not been as good as advertised so that gives Jets fans some hope. We have seen Darnold be very good and we have seen him be very bad—that's the life of a rookie QB in the NFL. Keep him on the bench for Week 4 against Jacksonville.

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns

Sam Darnold's second career start was a little different than his first. The Jets were playing from behind, so he was forced to throw almost twice as many passes (21 in Week 1; 41 in Week 2). He did throw for 334 yards, but let's face it—that was because of quantity, not quality. Darnold threw two interceptions and only one touchdown in Week 2.

Darnold will now face the team who passed on him with the first overall pick. The Browns are 28th in aFPA to quarterbacks, so Thursday could be more like Week 1 than Week 2 for Darnold. He still is a rookie and will make mistakes, so there is a risk in ranking him too high this early. Keep Darnold on the bench for Week 3 against Cleveland.

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Miami Dolphins

It was a pretty good NFL debut for rookie QB Sam Darnold, especially after throwing a pick-six on his first professional pass. After that, he went 16-for-21 with 198 yards and two touchdowns. He definitely raised some eyebrows from fantasy teams in Week 1.

Darnold will face a below-average Miami pass defense this Sunday and will also make his home debut. The Jets will remain conservative with Darnold, so expect them to try to stay around the 20 attempt mark early in the season.

Although he should not be considered a fantasy starter yet, Darnold moved himself up in the rankings to a low-end QB2 for Week 2 and should be considered a bench player at this point.

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Detroit Lions

Rookie Sam Darnold won the starting job in training camp with some impressive play in preseason games. That was preseason. He will now start his first NFL game and it will be on the road.

Darnold could end up being special for New York, but how long will it take? And if he struggles early, the Jets might opt to go to veteran Josh McCown. Darnold wil face a Lions defense that has struggled against the pass so the positive matchup should help him. But not enough to consider starting Darnold on your fantasy team. At this point, he probably should be on the waiver wire.
