Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Cribbs watched himself on film the day after the Detroit preseason game making a 30-yard sideline catch and felt like he was having an out-of-body experience.
"I definitely looked at that play when I caught the ball and I was like, 'Hey, look at him! Look at that guy!' " Cribbs said. "I was just kind of looking at myself in the third person. I saw the growth and saw how far I had come at being a wide receiver - being comfortable, begging for the football, just wanting it and having that drive of being a legitimate wide receiver."
Besides lining up at receiver in different formations - with two, three and four receivers - Cribbs will also still get reps in the "flash" package and Seneca Wallace's "cyclone" package - both versions of the wildcat. But defenses have more to think about now.
"I'm not just the gadget guy anymore," he said. "I'm a legitimate receiver. A lot of it has to do with coach believing in me, saying 'you're the man, so strap up.' I feel somewhat of a swag about myself, but at the same time staying humble enough to be on my responsibilities."
Cleveland wouldn't mind seeing Cribbs emerge as a full-time threat at receiver given the team's overall lack of options at the position. Someone needs to help Mohamed Massaquoi. However, Cribbs will probably continue in his role as Mr. Versatility and only be a big fantasy threat in return yardage leagues.
Eric Mangini's endorsement was not exactly definitive for QB Colt McCoy. With Jake Delhomme penciled in as the starter and Seneca Wallace having a good preseason, McCoy is locked in a battle for the No. 3 spot with Brett Ratliff.
It seems highly unlikely the Browns would actually pull the trigger on cutting a third-round draft pick like McCoy, who is younger than Ratliff and could develop slowly. Still, there's a sense the Browns feel McCoy is in over his head and not the physical talent they believed him to be.
QBs
Jake Delhomme’s preseason passer rating is 110.5. He is fourth in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Kyle Orton.
Seneca Wallace’s passer rating is high, 103.0, even though he has completed just half of his 26 passes. He benefits from averaging 8.8 yards per passing attempt (Delhomme is at 7.2) and a 3-to-1 touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio.
Through three games, the Browns lead their opponents 703-542 in passing yards. In the 2010 regular season, opponents led the Browns 3,915-2,076.
Delhomme was sharp in preseason game No. 3, going 20-of-25 for 152 yards, a touchdown and a 105.3 rating. That encouraging work is tempered by this bit of recent history: In his third preseason game last year, Brady Quinn went 11-of-15 for 128 yards, a touchdown and a 121.0 rating in a win over Tennessee.
RBs
Jerome Harrison has rushed 23 times for 72 yards. He is not concerned about his 3.1 per-carry average.
“I’m where I want to be,” he said, “besides the fumble.”
He was talking about a fumble that was recovered and returned for a touchdown Saturday. He also lost a fumble in the previous game.
Peyton Hillis leads the Browns in carries with 21. He is averaging 3.8 yards. James Davis has averaged 3.4 yards on 11 carries.
The Browns are looking for a back who can average closer to 4.5. That is one reason they are eager to get rookie Round 2 pick Montario Hardesty in a preseason game. He has missed the first three games but has not been ruled out of Thursday’s game against Chicago.
The Cleveland Browns may need umbrellas and boots to survive their next practice.
After a sloppy performance in the pouring rain, coach Eric Mangini intends to soak his players so they stop letting the ball slip away.
"We're going to turn the sprinklers on or dunk the ball in water," a disappointed Mangini said after Cleveland made five turnovers in a 19-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Saturday night during a steady downpour that didn't stop until the game ended.
Jake Delhomme overcame two early fumbles and was accurate and efficient throwing one touchdown pass in the soggy lakefront stadium.
Delhomme tossed a 6-yard TD pass to tight end Benjamin Watson, who made a one-handed grab at the back of the end zone in the second quarter. Delhomme finished 12 of 16 for 127 yards before he was replaced in the second half by Seneca Wallace, who connected for a 15-yard TD with Joshua Cribbs to give Cleveland a 17-13 lead in the third.
Josh Brown's fourth field goal, a 28-yarder with 3:33 left, won it for St. Louis (1-1).
Rams rookie quarterback Sam Bradford had his second straight shaky outing. The No. 1 overall draft pick, Bradford, expected to start for this season, went 6 of 14 for 24 yards coming off the bench behind A.J. Feeley. Bradford wasn't sacked after being dropped behind the line four times last week.
Feeley sustained a thumb injury, but threw a TD pass before leaving.
St. Louis running back Steven Jackson had four carries for 20 yards in his first game since undergoing back surgery in April.
Delhomme was missing one of his main targets as starting wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi didn't dress because of a strained hamstring sustained last week in Green Bay. Massaquoi only practiced once all week, and the Browns said he would have played if it was a regular-season game.
Delhomme threw primarily short passes, but moved the ball up and down the field, something Cleveland struggled to do last season when Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson took turns as the starter.
It didn't start well for Delhomme, who fumbled and recovered the game's first snap. But he collected himself and showed poise and precision in tough, wet conditions. His TD pass was initially ruled incomplete, but Mangini challenged the call and it was overturned by replay.
The Rams managed 178 total yards, one week after gaining only 150 in a loss to Minnesota. But they got their first look at Jackson, their dreadlocked star who powered up the middle for 11 yards on his first touch.
Browns rookie QB Colt McCoy didn't complete a pass during his two, three-and-out series in the fourth.
